Black Hills State men's basketball fell to RV Colorado Mesa, 80-69 Friday night in its first loss of the 2022-23 season.
The Yellow Jackets (13-1, 7-1 RMAC) battled in their first home game since Dec. 16, but couldn't cool the Maverick's 50.8 percent shooting from the field.
Joel Scott finished the night tying a season-high 31 points to go along with seven rebounds and a steal.
Ryker Cisarik also grabbed seven boards and scored four.
Adam Moussa dished out a pair of assists and tallied four rebounds and seven points.
Sindou Cisse scored eight points and
Jaeton Hackley scored six.
A back-and-forth battle early on, a pair of Cisse 3-pointers and a Scott triple put BHSU ahead 13-9 five minutes into the game.
CMU would move ahead after that and hold a lead until a Cisse layup evened the score at 23-23, and then a Cisarik three put the Yellow Jackets back out in front, 26-23 with 5:42 to play in the first. The Mavericks would outscore BHSU 10-4 the rest of the half, though, and the Yellow Jackets trailed 33-30 at the break.
Both teams got out to slow starts in the second half with neither team finding net until 17:49 when CMU started what would end up being another 10-4 scoring run to make the BHSU deficit 43-34.
A 3-point play from Scott at 8:49 and a Moussa triple at 2:42 would give BHSU chances down the stretch, before ultimately falling, 80-69.
