Volleyball Falls Short in Friday Matchup Against CSC

Black Hills State volleyball hosted the first of their last two home games on Friday night against Chadron State, falling to CSC in straight sets.

Abigail Renner took charge of the BHSU offensive game plan, securing 13 kills on the night for 13 points and clocking out with a .375 attack percentage. Audrey Brgoch rode behind her teammate with seven kills on her stat sheet, pairing with a service ace to aid the sophomore to an eight-point night.

Hannah Lamon recorded 27 of 28 assists on the night for the Yellow Jackets while posting a solo block and a pair of assisted blocks, leading the team in both categories. Erin Weibel led in digs with a career-high 15 on the night while Haedyn Rhoades secured 14. Rhoades also finished with a service ace for BHSU.

Set One (L, 25-17)
BHSU got off to a hot start in the first set, using a CSC attack error to launch a 6-2 run to take the first outright lead of the night. The Eagles, however, were quick to get back on their feet as CSC recorded four unanswered points to lock the frame back up at a 6-all scoreboard.

After CSC knocked down three more to take a 9-6 lead, both teams traded services until a pair of consecutive scoring runs from the Eagles slowly pulled them to a 16-12 lead.

A CSC service error, leaving a 22-17 deficit, gave BHSU an opportunity to claw back into the set, but a Wellhoefer kill was followed up by three scores in a row for the Eagles, giving the visitors the first set point of the match.

Set Two (L, 25-21)
After trading serves to start set number two, a 6-1 run from CSC boosted the Eagles to a 7-2 lead. An Eagle service error followed by a kill from Audrey Brgoch and an ace from Rhoades brought BHSU back to a three-point deficit, 8-5. Another 6-1 series from the Eagles, however, re-established an expanded 14-6 scoreboard.

The Yellow Jackets continued to fight as a solo block from Lamon opened a 4-1 burst that allowed BHSU to chip away at the Eagle lead. A Renner kill and blocking point from a Lamon-Louderback block stretched the series to 6-2, closing the gap to 15-12 and forcing a timeout out of the visitors.

Though CSC scored four in a row to open the gap to 19-12, BHSU refused to lie down as another 6-2 run kept them in the frame and pulled the set to a 21-19 scoreboard. Set two went down to the wire, but CSC hung on to escape the frame with the set point.

Set Three (L, 25-6)
After a 6-2 start from CSC, the Eagles recorded an 19-3 series over BHSU to take the third set.
