DENVER, Colo. - Black Hills State volleyball went down to the Mile High City to take on the No. 16 Regis on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Rangers in straight sets.
Â
The Yellow Jackets (4-6, 0-2 RMAC) put up competitive play in the first two sets, going toe-to-toe with the Rangers to begin the first and second frames.
Â
Leading BHSU on the attack was
Emily Freeland, who recorded 10 kills and recorded 10 points for the Yellow Jackets, finishing the game with a .217 attacking percentage.
Â
Audrey Brgoch secured the single service ace on the Yellow Jackets' stat line against the Rangers in the second set. The sophomore also recorded three kills and a blocking assist on defense, securing 4.5 points for BHSU.
Â
Haedyn Rhaodes led with 16 digs in the tilt against the No. 16 Rangers, with
Randi Wellhoefer and
Hannah Lamon both recording two blocking assists at the net.
Â
Set One (L, 25-17)
Though they trailed 6-3 off the jump, the Yellow Jackets secured four unanswered points to take a brief 7-6 lead over the Rangers, thanks to kills from Renner and Freeland. Regis, however, struck back with a 6-0 run to force a BHSU timeout at a 12-7 scoreboard.
Â
A kill from Renner kicked off back-and-forth scoring for a handful of services until a 5-1 run from Regis forced another BHSU timeout and led to a 19-12 score. BHSU fought until the final whistle but could not spur up a run to catch up to Regis and fell by eight to end the first frame. Â
Â
Set Two (L, 25-15)
The second set started on even footing through the first dozen services, but the Rangers were able to break out to a 12-6 lead on six unanswered points.
Â
The rest of the set remained one sided in favor of the No. 16 Rangers. Though blocks from the Yellow Jacket front and a kill from
Alyson Louderback notched a small 3-0 burst, Regis matched them with three of their own to take a 21-9 advantage.
Â
BHSU recorded a 6-2 run off the hands of Freeland and Renner to draw within eight, 23-15, but a service error and Regis block shut down the Yellow Jacket momentum and sent the game into the third.
Â
Set Three (L, 25-3)
The Yellow Jackets fought hard in the rallies to begin the matchup, but No. 16 Regis secured a 13-0 lead to start, and the set remained one-sided down the stretch.
