CHADRON, NEB. – Black Hills State women's volleyball held their second of two non-conference pod matchups on Saturday afternoon against Chadron State, dropping the match to the Eagles in straight sets.
The Yellow Jackets (5-9, 0-4 RMAC) were led on offense by
Abigail Renner and
Randi Wellhoefer, who both recorded eight kills in the contest, with Wellhoefer dropping 11 points and Renner 9.5. Wellhoefer also recorded a solo block and blocking assist to lead BHSU at the net.
Audrey Brgoch and freshman
Mianna Cardenas also held solo blocks against the Eagles, with Cardenas raking in two block assists to go with it. As a unit, the Yellow Jackets walled-up for seven total blocks in the contest.
Hannah Lamon led from behind the service line with another pair of service aces on the season. Wellhoefer and
Emma Kruger reigned in the other two aces for BHSU to total four on the afternoon. Kruger also led the team with 14 assists, followed up by Lamon with 11 against CSC.
Haedyn Rhoades held a majority of the digs for BHSU, grabbing 17 of the 47 total recorded by the Yellow Jackets.
Set One (L, 25-21)
A bad set and Renner kill got things started from the Chicoine center, with the Eagles quickly catching up to knot the setup in the first four services. Following a pair of exchanged service errors, scores from Saiki and Freeland boosted a Yellow Jacket 4-1 series to give BHSU the outright 6-3 lead.
CSC slowly climbed back to a tying score, but the Yellow Jackets did not surrender the lead as the set saw three tying scores heading down the stretch.
BHSU was able to string together a solid attack at a 17-16 scoreboard, with a Wellhoefer kill and two Lamon service aces stirring up a 4-1 series for the Yellow Jackets to stretch the lead to 20-17. In response, however, the Eagles strung up their own 4-1 run to knot the set at 21-all, forcing a timeout from the BHSU sideline.
Out of the timeout, Chadron continued pushing as they secured a blocking point and service ace to take their first lead of the set, 23-21, and secured the final two points needed to go on the board first.
Set Two (L, 25-16)
Though a Freeland kill helped BHSU start out on top, the Eagles took the lead with five unanswered points and continued to control the set from here. An 8-2 CSC run gave them a 13-5 scoreboard, taking advantage of multiple scoring runs to take the set by nine.
Set Three (L, 25-20)
Quick to get in front this time around, BHSU hopped out to a quick 5-3 lead, but another solid 5-1 run from CSC gave them a brief, one-point lead.
From here, both squads continued to trade blows and exchange the lead, with neither side bowing until another CSC-sided scoring run put the Eagles in front, 15-12. They continued to put pressure on the Yellow Jackets, scoring another two unanswered until a Saiki spike and Brgoch block helped pull BHSU within three, 18-15.
Down 21-15, a pair of Wellhoefer kills and a Cardenas block pulled BHSU back to a four-score deficit, 22-18, forcing a CSC timeout. Though they fought to the end, the Yellow Jackets did not have enough time to climb back into the set and the Eagles took the set by five.

The Yellow Jackets will stretch their road slate and travel down to Durango, Colorado next Friday, Oct. 6 for a match against Fort Lewis College, with first serve at 6 p.m.
