BHSU Picks Up Tenth Win of Season with 74-52 Victory Over Cowgirls

Yellow Jackets make a season-high 25 free throws; Haylee Weathersby with a season-high 19 points

SPEARFISH, S.D. – A 28-point fourth quarter outburst lifts the Black Hills State University women's basketball team (10-5, 7-4 RMAC) over the Cowgirls of New Mexico Highlands (4-15, 3-10 RMAC) 74-52, picking up their tenth win of the season back in front of the home crowd inside A2 Arena Friday evening.
The opening possession saw a pair of Cowgirl fouls and three Yellow Jacket points as Morgan Hammerbeck (Sr., Hamill, S.D.) went through contact for an and-one opportunity. Black Hills State opened the contest on a 9-2 run in the first minutes. New Mexico Highlands would claw back to within two at 10-7. Jaylen Ostenson (Fr., Newcastle, Wyo.) would respond with a lay-up on the following possession, as that score would hold into the first media time out. The Cowgirls would cut the lead two just two points, 18-16, by the end of the first quarter. BHSU got to the line six times, getting into the bonus in the first 10 minutes of the game, converting on seven of the 10 attempts.

New Mexico Highlands scored the first four points of the second quarter to take their first lead of the game, 20-18. Seeing her first minutes of the contest, Alessia Capley (Gr., Arvada, Colo.) would give the Jackets the lead back with a lay-up after a find from Hammerbeck into the post. NMHU's Juliana Aragon single-handedly kept the Cowgirls within striking distance, making four-of-five shots in the frame with BHSU leading 23-22 with just under four minutes in the half. Karissa Smith (Fr., Freedom, Wis.) would put a pair of points on the board to push the lead back up to three. The Highlands kept it closer for the rest of the half but never was able to reestablish a lead. Black Hills State would take a 29-26 lead into the locker room as Raven Cournoyer (Gr., Mission, S.D.) picked up her first points of the night with a driving lay-up with under a minute remaining.

The third quarter was the Capley and Haylee Weathersby (Jr., Glendale, Ariz.) show as the duo combined for 13 of the team's 17 third quarter points. By the end of the frame, Black Hills State surpassed their largest lead of the first half (9-2), opening an eight-point lead at 44-36. The Cowgirls kept it within striking distance through three quarters, but it would be all Yellow Jackets heading into the final 10 minutes of action.

Weathersby opened the final frame with a lay-up in the first seconds for her 15th point of the evening to take the game-high mark early in the fourth. Capley finished through contact with eight minutes to go and her free throw gave BHSU their largest lead of the game at 10 points, 51-41 as she also hits the double-digit scoring mark. BH would keep the Cowgirls at bay the rest of the game, as Weathersby continued to be a menace in the paint as they would push their lead up to 15 points entering a media time out with four and a half to play (60-45 BHSU). Kalla Bertram (Jr., Colome, S.D.) would get her opportunity that would turn into a five-point possession for BH, following a technical foul on NMHU. A Bertram jumper with three minutes to play would push the Jacket lead up to 20 points at 67-47. Kaycee Groves (So., Faith, S.D.) all but put the nail in the coffin with a three-pointer to make it 72-47, as Black Hills State would go on to outscore the Cowgirls 28-11 in the fourth quarter.

Black Hills State picks up their third-straight home win with the 74-52 victory, holding their 11th opponent of the season to under 60 points.
