Yellow Jackets Drop Road Contest in Durango Against Fort Lewis

DURANGO, Colo. – The Black Hills State University women's soccer team started the second leg of their 4-game road swing through Colorado with a loss on Friday night as they fell by a score of 4-0 to Fort Lewis. The Yellow Jackets were unable to slow down the Skyhawk attack early in the contest under the lights at Dirks Field, as it took less than two minutes for FLC to find the net in what would be the first of three first half goals. The momentum continued into the second half for Fort Lewis as it took less than a minute for the Skyhawks to find their fourth goal of the game, and they held BHSU without a shot on target in the half until the 87th minute.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Fort Lewis struck early in the contest as Danielle Gonzales sent a pass deep down the middle of the field to lead Haley Stafford past the defense for an open shot from the top of the box as she placed the ball into the top of the net for a 1-0 lead in the second minute.
  • Black Hills State saw a pair of scoring opportunities ten minutes later when in the 12th minute a free kick from just inside the midfield line by Anacel Valenzuela-Acosta landed on target but was corralled by Riley Bravin. Then in the 13th minute off a free kick from ten yards past midfield, Hailey Warren headed the ball towards the center of the net, but it was deflected away by a charging Bravin for the Skyhawks before another Yellow Jacket could get to it off the bounce.
  • FLC extended their lead to 2-0 in the 25th minute when Abila Tapia took possession of the ball just off the right post of the goal before backing out and finding an open look from 12 yards out into the top left corner.
  • BHSU continued to keep it a back-and-forth contest despite the score as a diving save by Makayla Dannelly in the 35th minute on a low shot from 20 yards out led to the Yellow Jackets quickly moving the ball up the field and receiving another free kick from ten yards inside the midfield line. After the free kick by Kylie Hayes was kicked around in a scramble for the ball, it wound up back at her feet as she dribbled the ball past a pair of defenders and fired a shot from 25 yards out toward the right corner of the net before it was picked up off the bounce by Bravin.
  • Fort Lewis tallied the final goal of the half in the 37th minute when Anna Tucker received a touch pass from Sabrina Reyes and fired a shot from 25 yards out that took one bounce and into the right corner of the net for a 3-0 lead into the halftime break.
  • Less than a minute into the second half the Skyhawks recorded the final goal of the match when Taylor Rittman received a pass from Abigail Nkrumah from inside the box, setting up a shot from 18 yards out into the nearside post in the 46th minute to make it a 4-0 contest.
  • Black Hills State continued to battle in the second half as Dannelly stopped five more shots on target the remainder of the game.
  • The Yellow Jackets wouldn't have another shot on goal until the 87th minute when Whitney Hansen and Ella Cornelius both tallied shots on target less than 30 seconds apart. Hansen's shot from 30 yards out sailed towards the left corner of the net before being snagged out of the air by Katlyn Rosenbaum, and Cornelius' shot from 25 yards out towards the left corner of the net took one bounce before falling into the hands of Rosenbaum for FLC.
  • Fort Lewis held the advantage in shots (26-10) and shots on goal (12-5), while Black Hills State held the edge in corner kicks (2-1) and saves (8-5).
