Yellow Jackets and Grizzlies Meet in Spearfish for First Time Since 2016

BHSU looks to keep up the strong play on the home field under Englehorn

SPEARFISH, S.D. – The Black Hills State University softball team (5-12, 4-8 RMAC) is set to take their three-game win streak when they host the Adams State Grizzlies (3-18, 1-11 RMAC) this weekend at Yellow Jacket Field for the first time since the 2016 season.

  • The current three-game win streak is the longest since the 2022 season.
  • Kayla Lee extends her hit streak to seven-straight game, recording a hit in every game against the Thunderwolves.
  • The Yellow Jackets brought their runs per game mark up nearly a whole run last weekend (3.0 to 3.9 runs per game).
  • BHSU sits third in the RMAC in stolen bases with 31 as a team; led by Tyler Whitlock's 11 for the Jackets.
  • Three Yellow Jackets remain perfect on the season in stolen bases: Whitlock (11-for-11), Lee (9-for-9), and Taylor Dowden (6-for-6).
  • Alyssa Wong continues to swing a hot bat: leading the team in batting average (.486) and multi-hit games (6).
  • For head coach Ashlyn Englehorn, the three-game win streak ties her career-best also doing so once in 2023 at Crown.

  • Alyssa Wong enters the weekend third in the RMAC in batting average (.486).
  • Ashlynn Pauwels is in a two-way tie for seventh in doubles (7).
  • Shayla Tuschen sits 10th in the RMAC with her 32 strike outs in the circle.
SWIPIN' BAGS!
  • BHSU is 31-for-234 in stolen bases this season, moving up to third in the RMAC.
  • The Yellow Jackets swiped 13 bags in the series win last weekend against CSU Pueblo.
  • Tyler Whitlock continues to lead the team in stolen bases with her 11 stolen bags (11-for-11).
  • She has now surpassed her grand total in the 2023 season (8) through just four weekends of the 2024 season.
  • Kayla Lee sits 9-for-9 in stolen bases this season, as her and Whitlock account for 65% of the team's stolen bases.
100 HITS CLUB
  • A pair of Yellow Jackets on the 2024 roster have joined the 100 hits club in their BH careers: Shayla Tuschen (122) and Gianna Haley (116).
  • Tyler Whitlock is on the 100 Hits watch list, currently entering the weekend with 79 hits to her name.

SERIES HISTORY – ADAMS STATE
  • Adams State leads the all-time series, 26-10.
  • 30 of the 36 games have been played in Alamosa, but it's the Grizzlies who lead the series 5-1 in Spearfish.
  • The Grizzlies took last season's series, 3-1 despite the Yellow Jackets taking Game 1.
SCOUTING THE GRIZZLIES
  • Adams State enters the weekend with a 3-18 record on the season but plates 4.4 runs per game this season.
  • The Grizzlies sit 12th in the RMAC standings through the first three weeks with an 1-11 record.
  • ASU picked up their lone win of the RMAC slate last weekend with a 10-6 win over Fort Lewis in Game 2.
  • Makayla Veglia leads the team in both batting average, while Grace Hendrickson paces the team in on-base percentage (.400).
  • Aubree Davis is the main arm in the circle for the Grizzlies, leading the team in innings pitched (64.0) and ERA (5.69).
RMAC PRESEASON POLL
  • Following an 8-36 record in 2023, the Yellow Jackets were picked to finish tied for 11th in the RMAC Preseason Coaches' Poll, announced on January 24.
  • BHSU was tied to finish along with Adams State in this year's poll.
Up Next: Black Hills State will hit the road next weekend for the state of New Mexico when they travel down to Las Vegas to face the Cowgirls of New Mexico Highlands University (6-11, 2-10 RMAC).
