MINOT, N.D. – Black Hills State wins the first but loses the second as
Laci Peskey put on a historic season debut in game one to beat UMary 7-1. However, the offense couldn't keep it going in Game two and a late charge by UMary allowed the Marauders to win 5-2 and split the doubleheader. This was thanks to the largest margin of victory in a season opener in BHSU's D2 history.

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 1
• UMary got on the board first with Sariah Perez hitting an RBI single with two on and two outs to take the lead.
Laci Peskey struck out the side in the first as well. The Yellow Jackets answered back with
Tyler Whitlock hitting a sacrifice fly to the first basement, then freshman
Desi Hernandez hit an RBI Double to deep left field, which allowed BHSU to get the bases loaded, which was followed by a walk by
Anna Gietzen which scored Hernandez then
Alyssa Wong stole home to make it 4-1, before a strikeout ended the inning. In total, six players reached base, and the Jackets batted around.

Tyler Whitlock had her 100th career hit in the second inning before being thrown out at second base.
• Black Hills State added to their lead in the third inning when Tyler Dowden hit a single up the middle into a fielder's choice that was impossible to make a play with the bases loaded, which scored
Ashlynn Pauwels to make it 5-1. Peskey continued her dominance tying the record for most strikeouts in a season opener with seven, as she has had three in the first, two in the second and the third.
• Black Hills State was able to force another bases loaded situation in the fourth with Hernandez walking, Pauwels hitting a single, and Wong forcing her third walk, before
Audrey Fouras hit a double that scored Hernandez and Pauwels to bring the score to 7-1 as Peskey struck out the side to go up to ten strikeouts setting a new career high in strikeouts and breaking the record for most strikeouts in a season opener.
• No more runs were scored the rest of the way, but Peskey completed the game with 13 strikeouts and only one earned run. BHSU won 7-1, which is the first season opening win since 2021 and is the largest margin of victory in a season opener in our D2 history.

• Black Hills State started the scoring once again in the first with Pauwels hitting an RBI single to score

• No one scored again until the fourth inning, when freshman
Carli Maley hit a double and
Carly Reyes Mims hit an RBI single to score Maley and made it a 2-0 game. Hoff had only given up one hit so far.
• UMary was able to put up four runs on Hoff in the fifth inning. They had three hits and scored one run off an error.
• They then added another run in the sixth inning with a score on an error, which brought the score to 5-2, which is how the game ended when BHSU failed to score in the top of the seventh.
