COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – For just the second time in program history, the Black Hills State University men's basketball team has been tabbed the preseason RMAC favorites. Accumulating 183 points with ten first place votes, the Yellow Jackets were voted by the leagues' head coaches to upend last year's regular season and tournament champions, Colorado School of Mines, who were picked second with three first place votes. BHSU is coming off their seventh consecutive top-4 finish under the leadership of head coach
Ryan Thompson, who guided the Green & Gold to an 18-12 (13-7 RMAC) record a year ago, and a trip to the RMAC Tournament Semifinals. Black Hills State is set to return ten players from the 2024-25 roster, including RMAC Freshman of the Year and First Team All-RMAC selection
Cam Lowe, and Honorable Mention All-RMAC selections
Jaeton Hackley and
Tristan Hurdle, who were all named 2025-26 Preseason All-RMAC.
HEAD COACH RYAN THOMPSON | 8TH SEASON | 139-66 (.678) OVERALL | 104-40 (.722) RMAC
The 2-time RMAC Coach of the Year,
Ryan Thompson, is set to begin year eight in Spearfish as he looks to lead Black Hills State to a potential third postseason appearance in the national tournament. Over the course of his seven seasons at the helm of the program, he has amassed a 139-66 overall record, the second-most wins all-time in school history and is one of just four BHSU coaches to surpass 100-career victories. His 2024-25 team gained momentum late in the season, winning eight of their last 11 games to reach the RMAC Tournament Semifinals for the fifth consecutive season and securing their seventh consecutive top-4 finish in the conference standings as they finished in a tie for third. Last year's team ranked 12
th in NCAA Division II in 3-point field goal percentage (38.5%) and was 23
rd in field goal percentage defense (41.7%), The Green & Gold join Colorado School of Mines and Colorado Mesa as the only three schools to win 13 or more conference games in each of the last four seasons.
CAM LOWE | REDSHIRT SOPHOMORE | 6-6 | 215 | COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. | LEWIS-PALMER H.S. | COLORADO STATE
The 2024-25 RMAC Freshman of the Year is back for year number two in Spearfish as he enters the season as the RMAC's active leader in career points per game (15.7), rebounds per game (7.9), and free throw percentage (83.7%). In 14 games he led the Yellow Jackets in scoring, reaching double figures 24 times and was above the 20-point threshold ten times. Among his top performances of the year was a career-best 28 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the field and 6-of-7 shooting from beyond the arc to rally BHSU to an overtime victory at UCCS. Of his 28 points he scored 25 of them in the second half and the overtime period. Later on in the season he recorded one of the best 3-point shooting performances in school and conference history, going a perfect 7-of-7 from beyond the arc in a win over Adams State, marking the most made shots from distance without a miss in school history and tying the mark for most made without a miss in RMAC history. Defensively he was the top rebounder in the league as a freshman, grabbing 6.9 defensive boards per game en route to nine double digit rebounding performances and eight double-doubles.
