Yellow Jackets Can’t Complete Comeback and Fall to Sioux Falls

SIOUX FALLS, S.D.- The Yellow Jackets almost completed an improbable comeback against the Cougars. They were trailing by as much as 12 in the third quarter and nine with 6:43 remaining in the fourth, they charged back and had a chance at a buzzer beater late but couldn't get it to fall and fell for the fourth straight game. It was the first time this season that three Yellow Jackets cracked double digits, with Stoebner having 15, Cooper having 14, and Schlabs having 13.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Sioux Falls started the game on a 6-2 run before a Maureen Ulrich three cut it to one. USF would then go on a 7-2 run to make 13-7. Each team split the next eight points keeping the lead at six, 17-11. Taylin Serlen would make two free throws to close out the first quarter with the Cougars leading 17-13.
  • The Cougars would make a layup to take a 19-13 lead before no team would score again for the next 2:03 in the second quarter. Sioux Falls would go on an 8-5 run to make it 27-18 and a three pointer by Anna Vaaler made it 30-20 giving USF the biggest lead of the game. BHSU would then go on a 8-0 run with a three and a layup by Schlabs, and another three by Cooper. Sioux Falls would end the half on a 5-0 run to take a 35-28 lead going into half
  • Sioux Falls started the third quarter on a 6-1 run to get a 12-point lead for what would be their biggest lead of the game. Stoebner would answer with five straight points to make it 41-34 before SF made a jumper to get it back to nine. The Yellow Jackets got eight of the next 12 points to get the gap all the way down to five thanks to four free throws and two jumpers. USF would answer by getting four straight points to get the lead to 51-42 before Cooper made five straight points to end the half and get it to 51-47 going into the final frame.
  • The Cougars would make two three in the first two minutes of the quarter to get a seven-point lead. That lead would get up to nine on an Ayla Brown layup. Alli Glasscock would make a jumper, and Cooper would make another three to make the score 59-55. USF would go on a 5-2 run to make it 64-57 before BHSU would get six of the next eight points to get it down to a one-possession game. USF only made two of their next four free throws to get it to 68-63 before Glasscock hit a clutch three to get the lead to two with four seconds left. Brown would miss the first free throw but make the second and the buzzer beater shot by Schlabs missed to give USF the 69-66 win.

UP NEXT
BHSU will now have a week off as they have just played their final non-conference game before conference play. They will then head to Rapid City, S.D. on December 2 to face South Dakota Mines in their first RMAC game of the season.
