Yellow Jackets To Face Chadron in RMAC Home Opener

SPEARFISH, S.D.- Black Hills State Women's Basketball (1-5) are coming back home Thursday night, where they will face the Chadron State Eagles (0-3) for the RMAC home opener in A2 Arena. The Yellow Jackets are trying to end a five-game losing streak, where they have lost by one-score four of the five games.

  • The Yellow Jackets are now 1-5 after falling to South Dakota Mines in the RMAC opener 64-62. It was BHSU’s fourth one-possession loss in the last five games and it’s the third time the Yellow Jackets have had a lead going into the fourth quarter in the last five. BHSU is still dominating the rebounding battle. They outrebounded SDM 39-27 and had 19 offensive rebounds, however, they only added eight second chance points.
  • Through the first five games of the season BHSU is averaging 63.5 points, 40.3 rebounds, 12.2 assists, 7.3 steals, and 2.0 blocks per game, while shooting the ball 37.4 percent from the field, 28.1 percent from 3-point range, and 66.3 percent from the free throw line. Their opponents are averaging 61.2 points, 32.2 rebounds, 10.7 assists, 5.3 steals, and 3.2 blocks per game, while shooting the ball 43.0 percent from the field, 30.2 percent from 3-point range, and 68.7 percent from the free throw line.
  • BHSU is ranked top 90 in the country in five different stats so far this year. They are 41st in offensive rebounds per game (16.2) and first in the RMAC. 44th in rebound margin (8.2), 69th in turnovers per game (14.7), 82nd in rebounds per game (40.3), and 89th in scoring defense (61.2).
  • The Yellow Jackets are a brand-new team. They only have seven returning players and only two saw meaningful minutes last year with only one starter returning in Bradie Schlabs. Last year the Yellow Jackets went 18-11 (13-7 RMAC) and finished fourth in the conference and won a game in the RMAC Tournament. They bring in three transfers and six freshmen, while getting two girls back from injury.
  • The Yellow Jackets were picked to finish sixth in the conference in the RMAC Preseason Coaches Poll with 127 points and one third place vote. They are currently 0-1 in the RMAC.
  • Addie Branscum is a newcomer, who is already making a huge impact for the Yellow Jackets. Branscum, a transfer from Regis, is averaging 13.0 points per game and 6.3 rebounds per game, while shooting 40.3 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from behind the arc, which is second in the conference. Her career-high is now 19 points, which she just accomplished, and 13 rebounds, which she did late in the season versus Colorado Christian. Branscum has now had ten points in five of the six games this year. She has also reached four rebounds in every game. Branscum had the first double-double of her career against SDM where she had 16 points and ten rebounds.
  • Reigning All-RMAC Second Team Bradie Schlabs is the only starter returning this year. She was named to the Preseason All-RMAC Team. She has started the year averaging 10.2 points per game, 3.8 rebounds and 4.2 assists. After becoming the first player in BHSU history to have 300 points, 100 rebounds, and 100 assists in a season last year, the sophomore has reached ten points in three of the four games including 23 points in the season opener versus St. Edward’s. She dropped 15 points, six assists, and three steals. 
  • Sawyer Stoebner is third on the team in scoring with 9.7 points per game after putting up her second ten plus point outing in Sioux Falls. She is also second on the team with 5.7 rebounds. She went out and put 15 points on the Cougars and shot 7-7 from the free throw line. This was just after she had her first 20-point game of her career versus Minnesota Crookston. She is also averaging 5.6 rebounds a game and had 14 rebounds during the East/West Challenge with a career-high eight versus Sioux Falls. Stoebner had seven points and six rebounds versus SDM.
  • Emily Cooper is in the midst of a breakout sophomore campaign, the Eau Claire, Wisconsin native is averaging 7.2 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 3.3 assists this year while shooting 33.3 percent from the field on 16-48 shooting. Cooper is coming off the best game of her career where she had a career-high 14 points versus Sioux Falls. She shot 5-12 from the field and 3-10 from the three-point line. While also adding three rebounds and three assists. Against the Hardrockers, she did it all. Cooper had five points, a career-high nine rebounds, and four assists.
  • Audrey Norville has turned into a solid player for BHSU. She played a lot of minutes last year and has now been thrown into the starting lineup. After not scoring in the first game versus SEU, Norville had a stellar second start, where she had her first career double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Each of those were career highs. She shot has put up five rebounds in four of the six games this year. She had nine points and four rebounds in the game versus SDM going 4-7 from the field.
  • Head coach Kelly Kruger is in the midst of his first season as Interim Head Coach of the BHSU Yellow Jackets. He is 1-5 in his time with the Green and Gold. He is in his 35th season as a head coach, however, and has a record of 532-451 with programs across all levels of college basketball including Northwestern College, Southwest Minnesota State, Adams State, Ashford University, and Iowa Central Community College.
  • Chadron State has only played in three non-exhibition games this year up to this points and is 0-3 this season. They played back-to-back games versus Oklahoma Christian to start the season where they lost by a combined 42 points in Edmond. They then went and played Wayne State in Wayne, Nebraska and lost by 42 points.
  • Through the first two games of the season CSC is averaging 52.7 points, 28.7 rebounds, 10.0 assists, 7.3 steals, and 2.3 blocks per game, while shooting the ball 32.9 percent from the field, 24.7 percent from 3-point range, and 68.6 percent from the free throw line. Their opponents are averaging 80.7 points, 42.0 rebounds, 12.7 assists, 12.0 steals, and 1.0 blocks per game, while shooting the ball 43.0 percent from the field, 33.3 percent from 3-point range, and 69.9 percent from the free throw line.
  • The Eagles are ranked top 65 in the country in two categories. They are 54th in three-point attempts per game (24.4) and are 61st in bench points per game (26.4). They are also seventh in the RMAC in blocks per game (2.4), and ninth in the conference in three-pointers per game (5.6)
  • The Eagles only have one returning player who played for any minutes for the Eagles last year. They have nine junior college transfers, one D2 transfer, one redshirt, and five freshmen.
  • Chadron State was picked to finish 14th in the RMAC preseason coaches’ poll. They received 46 votes just one behind Westminster for 13th. They have not played an RMAC game yet.
  • The Eagles don’t have a player averaging over ten points per game. Their leading scorer is Audrey Quintana who is averaging 9.3 points per game and 2.0 assists per game. Quintana is coming off her best game of the season where she had 15 points and two assists versus Wayne State, It was her first time reaching ten points this season. She also had four rebounds, which was a season-high.
  • Kenna Wagner, a freshman guard from Fort Collins, Colorado has also made an impact early this season. She averages 9.0 points per game and 2.7 assists per game. She also reached the ten-point mark for the first time this season reaching 14 points, two rebounds, two assists, and two steals versus Wayne State. She went 5-7 from the field and 2-2 from three-point range.
  • McKenzi Peterson is averaging eight points a game and a team-high four rebounds a game. Peterson has reached ten points once and nearly had a double-double in game two versus OCU, where she had 12 points and nine rebounds. Peterson is coming off a six-point performance against Wayne and had only one rebound and one block.
  • Head Coach Jalen Little is in his first season as head coach of the Eagles. He is currently 0-3 in his first season as a head coach. Little comes to Chadron after spending the past five years as an assistant at CSU Pueblo and was also a men’s assistant at Chadron for four years before that.

 
SERIES HISTORY

  • BHSU is dominating the all-time series versus the Eagles. They currently lead the series 27-10 with all eight of those losses coming before the D2 era. BHSU has only lost twice in the past 14 years to Chadron, however, one of those losses was last year in Chadron. 
  • BHSU went 1-1 versus the Eagles last year. They had their 13-game winning streak versus CSC snapped in Chadron when they lost 60-50 in late January. They did beat Chadron 60-52 in A2 Arena last year.
