BHSU Continues Road Trip with Visit to Westminster

SPEARFISH, S.D.- The Yellow Jackets are coming off 67-59 win over Regis that moved the Yellow Jackets to 15-8 (11-5 RMAC). BHSU was able to survive this one by a couple of big runs early in the game as well as taking a lot of free throws and making most of them. It helped BHSU overcome their loss to Colorado School of Mines and keep themselves in the top 3 of the conference.

BLACK HILLS STATE STORYLINES:
•    Black Hills State enters this game versus Westminster ranked third  in the RMAC at a 15-8 (11-5 RMAC) record. They are coming off of a win over Regis that the score makes it seem closer than it was. BHSU held this game from the beginning scoring 24 points in the first quarter which is the second most points we've scored in the opening period behind scoring 25 the last time we played Regis. 
•    The Yellow Jackets had a solid game from the field shooting 43 percent, but once again struggled from behind the arc going 5-21 (23.8%). It was the second most three-point attempts BHSU has attempted all season in a game. BHSU went 22-51 from the field in this game including 10-17 in the first quarter. 
•    The crucial part of the game that helped BHSU was foul game. BHSU drew 20 fouls in this game and took 24 shots from the free throw line while making 18 of them. It was the second most free throw attempts this year, and second most free throws made in a game this season. 
•    The 11 double-doubles BHSU has this year is the most in BHSU's D2 history. All five starters have at least one double double. The five different players with at least one is also the most in team history and the three players with multiple double-doubles is once again the most in team history. Currently, Kalla Bertram, Haylee Weathersby, and Bradie Schlabs each have three, while Morgan Hammerbeck and Gracie Haneborg have one. 
•    Black Hills State is ranked third of three RMAC schools in D2CSC South Central Regional Media Poll, appearing for the 13th consecutive week as they moved up the rankings to a tie for 6th and now sit above a slew of Lone Star Conference teams. 
•    Black Hills State had been picked to finish ninth in the RMAC Preseason Coaches' Poll, receiving 94 points in the vote among head coaches. They are currently third in the conference standings after 11 wins in 16 games to begin RMAC schedule.
•    Through the first 23 games of the season BHSU is averaging 63.7 points, 38.3 rebounds, 12.9 assists, 6.3 steals, and 1.8 blocks per game, while shooting the ball 41.8 percent from the field, 28.1 percent from 3-point range, and 68.9 percent from the free throw line. Their opponents are averaging 58.5 points, 31.5 rebounds, 9.8 assists, 6.6 steals, and 2.5 blocks per game, while shooting the ball 38.5 percent from the field, 33.7 percent from 3-point range, and 74.4 percent from the free throw line.
•    The Yellow Jackets currently rank 11th in NCAA Division II in fewest turnovers per game (12.9), seventh in fewest fouls per game (13.0), and 35th in rebound margin (6.8). In the win over Regis, BHSU had 18 fouls, which combined with the CSM game, that's 39 turnovers in two games, which is by far their worst weekend of the season turnover wise. They dropped from fifth to 11th in the country in turnovers per game. They only combined for 23 fouls, with ten against the Rangers.  They outrebounded CSM and RU by nine each game with a 37-28 rebound margin against Regis. 
•    Leading four players in double figures scoring for Black Hills State is Kalla Bertram who is one of the top scorers and rebounders in the conference, ranking 10th in points per game (13.7) and 11th in rebounds per game (6.9). Additionally, Bertram adds 1.6 steals per game and 2.2 assists per game. She has been efficient shooting the ball as she ranks tenth in the RMAC in field goal percentage, knocking down 118-of-275 shot attempts (42.9%), and has scored in double figures in 18 of the 23 games this year. She has notched three double doubles this season against Lubbock Christian (17 points, 11 rebounds), Chadron State (19 points, 11 rebounds), and CSU Pueblo (17 points, 10 rebounds). She has reached her season-high mark in steals on three different occasions and has recorded multiple steals in 15 games. Bertram is coming off a 12-point, seven-rebound performance versus Regis where she shot 5-12 (41.6%). She also added three steals to her game as well.  
•     Haylee Weathersby, who is second on the team in scoring with 13.2 points and adds 6.5 rebounds per game. She currently ranks third in the RMAC in field goal percentage and 25th in the country, knocking down 118-of-217 (54.4%) shot attempts this year. She has reached double figures and has scored 12 or more points in 15 of 23 games this year in addition to grabbing five or more boards in 19 contests including eight or more in three of the last four games. She is now at three double doubles this season against Chadron State (14 points, 10 rebounds), Colorado Christian (29 points, 10 rebounds), and UCCS (15 points, 10 rebounds). She is coming off a team leading 14-point, seven-rebound performance versus the Rangers, where she went 5-7 from the field and 4-4 from the free throw line.   
•    The lone freshman in the starting lineup for each of the first 22 games this year has been Bradie Schlabs is averaging 12.1 points, 5.9 rebounds, 4.2 assists, and 1.5 steals per game. She has scored in double figures in 15 games, including a season-high of 24 points versus CSU Pueblo. She has now had 12 of her last 14 games with double-digits and nine of her last 13 with 13 or more points. She has secured four or more boards on 20 occasions, including 18 of the last 19 games. Schlabs has dished out four or more assists in 16 games, 11 of the last 16, and has tallied a steal in 20 of 23 games this year. She ranks third in the RMAC in assists (96), assists per game (4.2), and assist/turnover ratio (1.57), while also ranking 60th, 50th, and 69th nationally in NCAA Division II in the respective categories. Schlabs has officially moved into 9th all-time in single season assists with 96, passing Tracy Winjum and Lindsey Buthe. Schlabs is a one-time RMAC Offensive Player of the Week winner (2-10-25). She is coming off a great bounce-back game where she had 16 points, four rebounds, five assists, and two steals on 5-10 (50%) shooting, while going 5-6 from the charity stripe. 
•    Morgan Hammerbeck is another player to keep an eye on. She is averaging 11.3 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 2.1 assists. She is shooting the ball 41.9 percent from the field, 33.3 percent on 3-pointers, and 78.4 percent of free throws. She currently ranks eighth in the RMAC in total 3-pointers made (41) and ninth in 3-pointers per game (1.79). Hammerbeck has one double-double this season coming against South Dakota Mines (18 points, 12 rebounds), and is coming off an 11-point, four-assist game where she shot 4-12 from the field against Regis.  
•    Yellow Jacket alumna Rachel Erickson is in her first season as the head coach at Black Hills State, guiding BHSU to a 15-8 record thus far.

WESTMINSTSER STORYLINES
•    Westminster enters this game 5-18 (4-12 RMAC) and sits last place in the RMAC. They are coming off a 44-point loss to Adams State, where they allowed Rangers' Kiiyani Anitielu to break the single game record for points with 52. They also allowed three players to reach double-digit rebounds and two double doubles.  
•    Westminster Head Coach, Asami Morita is in the middle of her second season as head coach. Morita currently sits at a 8-43 record overall and a 5-23 conference record. She came to Salt Lake City from University of Nevada. 
•    One of the main issues for Westminster has been their offense. They are currently the worst ranked scoring offense in the conference and are bottom 20 nationally in the category. They score 55.2 points per game and have been held to 50 or less points ten times. They also shoot 35.7 percent from the field which is last in the RMAC as well. They have finished with less than 35 percent from the field in 12 of their 23 games. Now, they do have a couple of categories they excel in. They are third in the RMAC in blocks per game with 3.2 and are fourth in the conference in fouls per game with 15.3.  They are also solid defending the three-point shot, holding opponents to 30.4 percent from behind the arc, and are also seventh in the RMAC with 26.4 defensive rebounds per game. 
•    The Griffins are averaging 55.7 points per game, 36.9 rebounds, 11.8 assists, 6.8 steals, and 3.0 blocks, while shooting 35.8 percent from the field, 26.6 percent from three, and 67.2 percent from the free throw line. On the other hand, they are allowing 71.5 points, 40.0 rebounds, 15.1 assists, 10.2 steals, and 3.0 blocks, while opponents are shooting 42.3 percent from the field, 30.6 percent from three, and 73.8 percent from the charity stripe.  
•    Westminster has one player averaging over ten points per game, that is Teuila Nawahine. Nawahine is averaging 12.2 points per game and 4.3 rebounds per game. She has reached double digits in seven of the last ten games, with her season high being 22 points versus Regis. She has had multiple assists in five of the last six games as well as reaching five or more rebounds in five of the last six. She is coming off a 13-point game, where she added three rebounds and one assist against Adams State. 
•    Senior Center Maunayia Harrington is averaging 10.5 rebounds per game, while adding 8.2 points per game. She is also leading the team in assists (53), steals (38), and blocks (40). Harrington is 17th nationally in total rebounds (253), and fourth in defensive rebounds per game (8.3), while ranking 19th in total rebounds per game (10.5). She is second in the RMAC and 29th in the country in blocks (43) and blocks per game (1.79). She has reached double digit rebounds in 12 games including five of the last seven. She is sitting at six double-doubles on the season including last Thursday versus New Mexico Highlands. She has also had a block in all but three games this season. She is coming off a two-point game, where she had 11 rebounds, and three assists, with two blocks and a steal versus the Grizzlies. 

SERIES HISTORY
•    BHSU leads the all-time series versus the Griffins 8-4 and has won four of the last six versus Westminster. 
•    The last time these two faced off was in Salt Lake City last January, where BHSU took care of business and won by 24 in blowout fashion 72-48. Hammerbeck led the team in scoring with 15 that game, shooting 3-6 from behind the arc.
