BHSU Survives Tough Battle Versus UCCS

SPEARFISH, S.D. –  The Yellow Jackets had four players in double-digits as they were able to hold off two late misses from UCCS en rout to a 72-68 win over the Mountain Lions, who were only a game back of them in the standings heading into this matchup.

The Yellow Jackets watched a 12-point lead in fourth disappear, but Morgan Hammerbeck was able to hit two clutch free throws to give BHSU the win. Bradie Schlabs led the team in scoring for the second game in a row with 18, and despite a lot of fouls being called, BHSU was able to survive for their third straight win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
•    Bradie Schlabs stole the first pass of the game and passed it off to Kalla Bertram to give the Yellow Jackets the early 2-0 lead. UCCS's Moore Allen would immediately answer with a layup of her own. This would be a back and forth early going as each team would make baskets until Morgan Hammerbeck went on a 5-0 run with a layup and a three pointer. Moore Allen would match it with a 5-0 run of her own to tie the game a 11-11. After a lot of fouling, Bertram would make a layup to give BHSU a 19-16 lead with 2:04 remaining in the quarter, but UCCS would go on a 4-0 run to take the lead 20-19 heading to the second quarter.
•    Schlabs would open up the scoring in the second to take back the lead for the Yellow Jackets and Bertram would also hit a layup to give BHSU a 23-20 lead. That lead would be gone instantaneously with a Gia Bradley three-pointer. There were baskets being traded before BHSU went on a 5-0 run to give themselves a three-point lead on an Audrey Norville pull up at 30-27. Bertram made two free throws to give the Yellow Jackets a 35-31 lead going into the halftime break.
•    The halftime leaders for the Yellow Jackets are Bertram with 15 points and three rebounds, Bradie Schlabs has five points, four assists, and two steals, and Haylee Weathersby leads the team in rebounds with four. The leaders for the Mountain Lions are Moore Allen with 12 points. There were a combined 18 fouls in the first half.
•    UCCS was able to hit two threes early in the half to cut the lead to one, but a Weathersby jumper got it to three. A pair of Moore Allen free throws tied the game, but Gracie Haneborg made two free throws of her own to get it back to 41-39 with 7:33 remaining in the quarter. Schlabs hit a three and Weathersby made a layup to bring the score to 47-42. Maison White had a three-point play, but Schlabs once again hit a three to keep the lead at 5. Hammerbeck and Schlabs would each make jumpers, and the Yellow Jackets would take a 54-45 lead into the fourth quarter.
•    Emily Cooper would hit a three for her first basket since Fort Lewis and give the Jackets a 12-point lead to start the fourth. The Mountain Lions would start to slowly chip away at the lead and by the time we reached 4:49 remaining in the game, the lead was down to four. Schlabs was able to bring the lead to 65-60 with a couple of layups, but UCCS kept coming. A Moore-Allen layup brought the lead to two with 2:47 remaining. Riley Ottmann hit a three to bring the lead to one at 68-67. UCCS was not able to get closer for a while as a couple of their tying chances fell short, and BHSU went 2-4 from the line. Bradley missed a wide-open layup to tie the game with five seconds remaining and Hammerbeck was able to ice the game at the line hitting both of her free throws to give the Yellow Jackets a 72-68 win. There were 38 fouls, which is the second highest of any BHSU game this season only behind 41 in the New Mexico Highlands game.
