COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – On Wednesday, March 12, the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference announced the 2024-25 First Team Academic All-RMAC selections as well as their list of RMAC Academic Honor Roll honorees for the sport of men's basketball. Highlighting this year's recipients and representing the Black Hills State University are
Joel Speckman and
Blake Volmer, who each received a spot as First Team Academic All-RMAC members, while joining them on the RMAC Academic Honor Roll were
Jackson Edman,
Dawson Mohr, and
Deegan Williams.
Speckman, who is receiving his first selection to the First Team Academic All-RMAC, ranks fourth in the RMAC in offensive rebounds per game (2.22). He added 7.6 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 1.9 assists per game, while shooting the ball 57.7 percent from the field. He scored in double figures in seven games total this year and secured five or more rebounds in 18 games this season, including reaching ten or more three times. His 10-point, 10-rebound performance against Western Colorado was his lone double-double of the season and just the second of his career. He posted multiple blocked shots in six games, four of which he recorded a season-high of three in the contest, and most recently did so against Adams State in which he posted three blocked shots within the first three minutes of the game in the final weekend of the regular season. In the classroom Speckman holds a 3.78 cumulative GPA as an exercise science major and is pursuing a minor in entrepreneurial studies.
Volmer, who just a couple of weeks ago was named the RMAC Summit Award recipient, has appeared in 26 games this season for BHSU, logging 11.3 minutes per game as he totaled 47 points, 54 rebounds, 11 assists, seven steals, and one block on the year. He's scored four or more points on seven occasions, including matching a career-high of seven points against Western Colorado in January. He's also hauled down three or more rebounds in 11 games, which was highlighted by a career-high of six boards against Regis in February. Another career-best mark came when he dished out three assists against Adams State on the final weekend of the regular season. Contributing to one of the top 3-point shooting teams in the country, he connected on multiple shots from beyond the arc two times with a pair against Westminster and Sul Ross State. In the classroom Volmer holds a 4.0 cumulative GPA as a business administration major and is pursuing a minor in athletic coaching.
Edman found a spot on the RMAC Academic Honor Roll for the first time in his career this season while playing in nine contests during the 2024-25 campaign. He logged 2.9 minutes per game as he totaled two points, four rebounds, two assists, one steal, and three blocks on the year. His lone two points of the season came on a pair of free throws against UMary in the Dakota Challenge in November. In the classroom Edman holds a 3.85 cumulative GPA as a business administration major and is pursuing a minor in finance.
Mohr found a spot on the RMAC Academic Honor Roll for the first time in his career this season while playing in 13 contests during the 2024-25 campaign. He logged 4.1 minutes per game as he totaled 23 points, eight rebounds, two assists, two steals, and one blocked shot. He contributed to one of the top 3-point shooting teams in the country by hitting 7-of-20 (35.0%) on the year, including knocking down a season-high of two on four attempts as he scored a season-best six points at Colorado Christian in December. In one of two games that he secured multiple rebounds this year, he grabbed a career-high of three boards at Sul Ross State on the opening weekend of the season. In the classroom Mohr holds a 3.64 cumulative GPA as a business administration major.
Williams found a spot on the RMAC Academic Honor Roll for the first time in his career this season while playing in 17 contests during the 2024-25 campaign. He logged 14.3 minutes per game as he totaled 45 points, 37 rebounds, 22 assists, six steals, and three blocks. He was an efficient shooter throughout the season, knocking down 17-of-31 (54.8%) from the field, 7-of-12 (58.3%) from 3-point range, and 4-of-6 (66.7%) from the free throw line. He scored in double figures once during the year, pouring in a season-high of 11 points as he went 4-of-5 from the field and 3-of-4 from beyond the arc. On the glass he secured three or more rebounds on six occasions and hauled in in a season-best of eight against Montana State Billings. Against MSUB he also dished out four assists, one of two occasions he notched the season-best mark, and collected a season-high of three steals. In the classroom Williams holds a 3.48 cumulative GPA as a business administration major and is pursuing a minor in finance.
The Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Academic Honor Roll recognizes student-athletes in each conference-sponsored sport who academically maintain at least a 3.30 cumulative grade-point average, have completed two consecutive semesters at their current institution, and have used a season of competition.
Each institution's athletic communications directors nominate student-athletes who academically maintain at least a 3.50 cumulative grade point average, along with the other criteria for the Academic Honor Roll, for recognition on the First Team Academic All-RMAC in each sport. The league's athletic communications directors for that sport vote to compose the First Team Academic All-RMAC and select the Academic Player of the Year. They are not permitted to vote for their own student-athletes.
