Yellow Jackets Fall in Closing Minutes to Grizzlies

ALAMOSA, Colo. – In a battle of two programs on the rise in women's soccer in the RMAC, Black Hills State fell to Adams State 2-1 at the ASU Soccer/Lacrosse Field on a goal in the 87th minute. Despite the quick start and early goal by Peyton Hill to give BHSU the lead 11 minutes in, ASU quickly responded less than a minute later and set the tone for the Sunday afternoon contest that marked the first time in 2025 that the Yellow Jackets were out-shot by their opponent.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Yellow Jackets struck first in the 11th minute as Peyton Hill found the back of the net for the fourth time this season. She took a pass from Kayla Truong and had a one-on-one opportunity against a Grizzly defender, then proceeded to cut back inside and place the ball into the right side of the net past the oncoming goalkeeper to make it a 1-0 contest.
  • The Green & Gold held the lead for less than a minute as Adams State responded quickly with a goal in the 12th minute by Grace Abbott. Abbott was able to control a ball that was attempted to be headed out of the box by a BHSU defender and placed the ball into the top-left corner of the net to even the score at one apiece.
  • Rian Barthel was able to keep the score even at one entering the halftime break as she made a pair of diving saves to keep ASU off the board the remainder of the first half. The first occurred in 13th minute on a shot attempt by Fatso Williams toward the top-center portion of the net, and then again in the 28th minute on a shot towards the top-right portion of the net by Lauren Ocampo.
  • The second and final shot-on-goal of the day for Black Hills State came in the 29th minute as Kylie Hayes found open space to get inside the box and placed a shot towards the bottom-left corner of the goal.
  • The only shot-on-goal of the second half by either team was the game-winner for the Grizzlies in the 87th minute by Williams. After the goal kick by BHSU, Ocampo was able to take the ball away and pass the ball forward to Abbott, who then found Williams in the middle of the box as she then proceeded to put the ball into the bottom-left corner of the net to give ASU the 2-1 advantage.
  • Adams State held the advantage in shots (12-4) and shots-on-goal (5-2), while Black Hills State held the edge in corner kicks (5-4) and saves (3-1).
