Yellow Jackets Hold Off Cowgirls for Eighth Straight Win

SPEARFISH, S.D.- On the back of a great team effort where everyone who saw the floor tonight for BHSU scored, the Yellow Jackets took down New Mexico Highlands to capture their eighth straight win 67-60. With the score tied at halftime, BHSU outscored NMHU 23-17 in the third quarter while shooting 52 percent from the field in that period. Bradie Schlabs and Sawyer Stoebner each had great games combining for 27 points with Stoebner finishing one rebound shy of her second straight double-double.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  •  The Yellow Jackets started off with an incredible jump ball where Taylin Serlen hit the ball right to Ulrich, who barreled down the lane for a layup within three seconds of the game starting. Serlen would get an "and one" to finish of a 7-2 BHSU run to begin the game. Highlands made back-to-back jumpers to close the gap to one, before BHSU went on a 6-3 run to end the quarter up 13-9.
  • Brinlee McRae hit a jumper to give BHSU a six point lead to begin the second quarter before NMHU went on an 11-2 run to take a 20-17 lead with six minutes to go in the half. Audrey Norville made a layup to get it back to one before Kapiolani Anitielu put it back to three. Emily Cooper hit the Yellow Jackets first three of the game to tie it at 22 and then the two teams traded the next six baskets with Taylin Serlen hitting a jumper to tie it at 29 going into halftime.
  • The halftime leaders for BHSU included Serlen, who had seven points and three rebounds, Brinlee McRae also put up six points, while Alli Glasscock had five rebounds. The Yellow Jackets defense held NMHU to 5-14 on layups in the first half. For Highlands, Kap. Anitielu put up 14 points and four rebounds in the first half, which led her team in both categories.
  • The third quarter started off great for the Green and Gold. They went on a 9-2 run to begin the period with Stoebner getting two layups and Schlabs getting a jumper and a three-pointer. The Cowgirls hit the next two buckets to make it 38-35, before Glasscock scored the next four points to bring it to 42-35. Essynce Contreraz hit back-to-back threes to make it a one-point game at 42-41. Each team traded a layup to keep the score at one before the Yellow Jackets ended the third period on a 8-3 run with Stoebner getting back-to-back buckets to end the half with BHSU up 52-46.
  • NMHU hit a layup to start the half before BHSU went on an 8-2 run to take a ten-point lead, which was their biggest of the night to that point to make it 60-50. The two teams traded 4-0 runs to keep the lead at ten with it being 64-54. Kap. Anitielu hit a three to make it 64-57, but they didn't get much closer. Down six with 38 seconds left, NMHU decided not to foul and let the clock run out to give BHSU a 67-60 win for their eighth straight victory.
