HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Following nearly two and a half minutes of scoreless basketball to begin the game, Black Hills State struck first as Myles Johnson went 1-of-2 at the charity stripe with 17:31 to play in the first half. Regis answered the ensuing possession with their first basket of the game, a driving right-handed layup by Cooper Frith to make it a 2-1 game with 17:14 on the clock. That would be the lone lead of the contest for the Rangers as Cam Lowe connected on the first field goal of the game for the Yellow Jackets, a 3-pointer from the right-wing off an assist from Jackson Seale to give BHSU the 4-2 advantage with 16:32 remaining in the opening half.
  • The first basket by Lowe sparked a 20-4 scoring run for the Green & Gold as they broke the game open during a four and a half minute stretch, knocking down 7-of-9 shots from the field and 5-of-7 from beyond the arc. During the run Lowe began to heat up, scoring 11 points as he sank an additional two 3-pointers alongside another two from deep from Tristan Hurdle. Joel Speckman capped the scoring run with an old-fashioned 3-point play, scoring a left-handed layup through contact off a pick and roll with BJ Woodruff, then the free throw made it a 21-6 lead with 12:07 to play till the break.
  • The Rangers briefly trimmed the lead back to single digits (21-13) with a 7-0 scoring run, but the Yellow Jackets once again had an answer as a right-handed Johnson layup off an assist by Woodruff sparked a 9-0 scoring run for BHSU. Capping the run was the fourth 3-pointer of the opening half by Lowe, this one a top of the key jumper off a kickout pass from Johnson to make it 30-13 with 8:04 on the clock.
  • The lead grew to more than 20 points with 3:54 left in the first half as Johnson laid in a reverse layup after driving the right baseline to make it 40-19. Then in the closing minutes Jaeton Hackley and Hurdle each sank a triple to bring the first half total to ten made shots from beyond the arc for the Yellow Jackets, with Hurdle's seeing the bottom of the net as the buzzer sounded, making it 48-21 off an assist from Hackley entering the halftime break.
  • In the first 20 minutes of play Lowe out-scored the Rangers as he poured in 24 points on 6-of-9 shooting from beyond the arc.
  • Hackley made his second basket of the contest for the first points of the second half, scoring on a driving right-handed layup to push the lead to 29 points (50-21) just 40 seconds out of the halftime break.
  • A steal and assist by Hackley led to a reverse dunk by Johnson in transition, pushing to lead to more than 30 points (57-26) for the first time in the contest with 16:11 remaining on the clock. Following a timeout after the dunk, the Rangers went on a 9-2 scoring run, capped by a steal and layup by Frith to cut the lead to 24 points (59-35) with 14:13 on the clock. The Yellow Jackets then once again had an answer with their own 12-3 scoring run that saw six points apiece by Woodruff and Speckman. Speckman would cash in on a right-handed hook shot in the paint with 10:12 left in the game, giving the Green & Gold their largest lead of the contest at 33 points (71-38).
  • The Black Hills State lead remained at more than 30 points until 3:30 as Gunner Walters hit a left-elbow jumper to cut the lead to 79-51. That basket for the Rangers was in the midst of a 15-7 scoring run as they trimmed the margin back to 24 points (84-60), capped by a steal and layup by Luke Soden with 44 seconds to play. The scoring in the game concluded with a right-corner 3-pointer from Woodruff off an assist from Benson Kieffer on the inbounds pass with 21.6 seconds remaining, making the final score 87-60.
