BLACK HILLS STATE STORYLINES
- Black Hills State is coming off the single best tournament in program history. Not only did they break the team 54-hole record by 52 shots with a 968 (+104) over the three days, but on day two, they posted a top five 18-hole program score with a 324 (+36), on day three, they broke the team 18-hole program record with a 315 (+27) by five shots and shot their first ever sub-320 round as a team. 968 was the first time BHSU has ever broken 1000 in a 54-hole tournament, and they beat two RMAC schools by more than five shots in the final round. They also set several individual records with two separate rounds making it into the individual 18-hole score top 10 and four of the six golfers posted 54-hole scores that all made the top 10 list.
- Black Hills State is heading to another course they know well. They are headed to The Golf Club at Red Rocks where they competed last year in the Texas Roadhouse Invite. BHSU has competed at that course every year since 2020 and Ava Kalanek has played it twice in college and Shelbi Gardner played it last year.
- The Yellow Jackets were projected to finish ninth this year in the RMAC Preseason Coaches' Poll receiving 18 points. They are currently ahead of Adams State and just behind the tie of South Dakota Mines and Fort Lewis.
- BHSU has a very new team this year. Outside of Shelbi Gardner, no other player on the roster competed at the RMACs last year. Ava Kalanek is the only other veteran on the team, but only played in two rounds last year, so this team will be a lot of new faces with one transfer and three freshman all getting significant playing time this 2026-27 season.
- Gardner will be the leader for the Yellow Jackets this season and will be teeing off as the #1 this tournament. She had the single best freshman season of all time this past year. Her 83.4 scoring average was the sixth lowest in BHSU D2 history. It is also the lowest by a freshman in BHSU single season history. She is only the third golfer since BHSU joined D2 to play more than 15 rounds and finish with a scoring average under 84. She joins Amanda Johnson and Katie Jorgenson in that group. She broke out at the Yellowjacket Fall Invite with the single best tournament performance in program history. After an 82 (+10) on the first day, Gardner followed it up with a 77 (+5) and a 75 (+3) in days two and three to post the 10th lowest score and the third lowest score in program history. Her 234 (+18) was the lowest 54-hole score in program history by nine shots and it placed her inside the top 10 in the tournament.
- Megan Robb is in the two spot this tournament. Robb is coming off another great tournament and it would have been the 54-hole program record if not for Gardner's 234. Robb shot a 242 (+26), which put her in a tie for 12th at the Yellowjacket Fall Invite. She not only posted the second-lowest 54-hole score in program history, but she shot the lowest 18-hole score of her career with a 78 (+6) on day three two days after breaking 80 for the first time with a 79 (+7) in round one.
- Cheyenne Shade, a junior college transfer from Central Wyoming, is one of the new faces on this roster. Last week, she had her best tournament as a Yellowjacket. Shade shot a 247 (+31) with an 82 (+10), 82 (+10), 83 (+11) over the three days. Her 54-hole score put her in a tie for 18th in tournament and posted the fifth lowest 54-hole score in program history.
- Ava Kalanek is the only other returner for BHSU. She is coming off a year, where she only played two rounds and that was at the Swan Memorial, where she shot a 163 (+19). Kalanek played in the TRMI and finished fourth on the team with a 267 (+51) over the three days with an 84 (+12) on day two and an 86 (+14) on day three to finish in a tie for 54th place. She had four birdies over the three days with 15 pars.
- Madison Brown, the first member of the 2026 signing class is fifth. Brown had a solid debut and has now improved every single round since her first round. Brown started the Yellowjacket Fall Invite with an 89 (+17) in round one and then found another gear after that breaking her career-low by seven shots with an 80 (+8) in round two and then broke it again with a 79 (+7) in round three. Brown shot a 248 (+32) to finish 20th place and post the sixth lowest 54-hole score in program history.
- Reagan Hatling is representing BHSU as an individual this weekend. Hatling has continued to improve every round she plays and has now posted a career-low under 90. Hatling shot a 286 (+70) over the three days and improved her score by 15 shots over the three rounds that included an 88 (+16) on day three, where she shot a 41 (+5) on the back nine.
- Randy Doran is entering his fourth season for the Yellow Jackets. In the D2 era, his players currently hold seven top-ten marks in 18-hole score, two in 36-hole score, and eight in 54-hole score. His teams have eight top-ten marks in 18-hole score, the top five 36-hole scores, and six of the top ten 54-hole scores. His team continues to improve and inch closer to the RMAC pack.
