BLACK HILLS STATE STORYLINES
- Black Hills State is two weeks off from an 11th place finish at the Travis Roy Memorial Invite, where they shot a team 54-hole score of 1033 (+169), which was the second lowest 54-hole score in the D2 history of BHSU Women's Golf. Despite having a brutal day one, they put up great scores on days two and three including nearly posting a top 10 mark with a 329 (+41) on day two and then shot a 334 (+46) on day three of the tournament.
- Black Hills State is heading to another course they know well. They are headed to Lake Hills Golf Club for the fifth straight season. BHSU has had quite a bit of success on that course. Back in 2024, BHSU posted the D2 record 18-hole score in the second round of that tournament with a 320 (+32). That allowed them to post the fifth lowest 36-hole score in program history with a 661 (+85). Last year at that course, BHSU finished with a 680 (+104) in eighth place as they shot a 335 (+47) on day one and a 345 (+57) on day two.
- The Yellow Jackets were projected to finish ninth this year in the RMAC Preseason Coaches' Poll receiving 18 points. They are currently ahead of Adams State and just behind the tie of South Dakota Mines and Fort Lewis.
- BHSU has a very new team this year. Outside of Shelbi Gardner, no other player on the roster competed at the RMACs last year. Ava Kalanek is the only other veteran on the team, but only played in two rounds last year, so this team will be a lot of new faces with one transfer and three freshman all getting significant playing time this 2026-27 season.
- Gardner will be the leader for the Yellow Jackets this season and will be teeing off as the #1 entering this season. She had the single best freshman season of all time this past year. Her 83.4 scoring average was the sixth lowest in BHSU D2 history. It is also the lowest by a freshman in BHSU single season history. She is only the third golfer since BHSU joined D2 to play more than 15 rounds and finish with a scoring average under 84. She joins Amanda Johnson and Katie Jorgenson in that group. Shelbi had a pretty solid Travis Roy Memorial Invite, she shot a 248 (+32) to finish in a tie for 37th. After a rough first day, she shot 80 (+8) and 78 (+6) on the final two days to post her score. She had BHSU's first eagle in three years on day three and had 27 total pars.
- Cheyenne Shade, a junior college transfer from Central Wyoming, is one of the new faces on this roster. She made her Yellow Jacket debut in Sheridan and finished third on the team with a 262 (+46) over the three days. She was able to bounce back in rounds two and three with an 85 (+13) and an 83 (+11) to sit in a tie for 48th place.
- Ava Kalanek is the only other returner for BHSU. She is coming off a year, where she only played two rounds and that was at the Swan Memorial, where she shot a 163 (+19). Kalanek played in the TRMI and finished fourth on the team with a 267 (+51) over the three days with an 84 (+12) on day two and an 86 (+14) on day three to finish in a tie for 54th place. She had four birdies over the three days with 15 pars.
- Megan Robb is in the four spot. Robb is coming off one of the better freshman debuts we've had at BHSU. She finished second on the team with a 261 (+45) and finished in 47th place. She had a very impressive second round, where she shot an 80 (+8) with two birdies and seven pars in the round. Â Her best nine came in round one on the front nine, where she shot 39 (+3) with only three bogeys and six pars.
- Madison Brown, the first member of the 2026 signing class is fifth. Brown had a solid debut as she finished fifth on the team with a 271 (+55) with an 87 (+15) on the third day and an 89 (+17) on day two. She improved every day of the tournament and had two birdies and had 17 pars over the three days.
- Reagan Hatling will make her BHSU debut this weekend as well. She is coming off a TRMI where she improved every day as well. She shot 336 (+120) over the three days and finished in 63rd place. She made three pars in the tournament.
- Randy Doran is entering his fourth season for the Yellow Jackets. In the D2 era, his players currently hold five top-ten marks in 18-hole score, two in 36-hole score, and six in 54-hole score. His teams have nine top-ten marks in 18-hole score, the top five 36-hole scores, and five of the top ten 54-hole scores. His team continues to improve and inch closer to the RMAC pack.
