Yellow Jackets Fall to Hardrockers in Black Hills Brawl Rivalry Series Match

SPEARFISH, S.D.- Black Hills State was able to take the first set and hold a lead late in the second set, but were unable to hold on to that momentum as South Dakota Mines took sets two, three, and four to win the match and take two points in the Black Hills Brawl Rivalry Series presented by Ford as they continue to stay atop the RMAC standings. Carsyn Mettler had a great game for the Yellow Jackets, but it wasn't enough to take the match against one of the top teams in the country.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • It took six points to get our first kill of the match as SDM took the first three points off attack errors and then BHSU took the next three off attack errors and an ace. After Lexi Glendenning gave SDM the 4-3 lead with the first kill of the match, BHSU went on a massive 9-3 run with three kills by Mettler and two kills from Abril to take a 13-7 lead. Each team took seven of the next 14 points to keep the lead at six at 20-14 as Mettler had three more kills and Makayla Dorsey had two. The Hardrockers took seven of the next 11 to cut the lead to 24-21 before a service error gave BHSU the 25-21 win.
  • SD Mines took a 4-2 lead early in the second set before BHSU got three straight points to take a 5-4 lead. SDM took the next five points to take a 9-5 lead back. Zoie Husman, Abril, and Dorsey took four of the next six points to make it a two-point game at 11-9 and then kept it at a two-point game until 15-13. SDM took two in a row to grab a 17-13 lead. The Green and Gold took four points in a row off a Dorsey kill and ace to tie it at 17. They then took four of the next six points with a kill and a block from Husman to make it 21-19. The Rockers answered by winning six of the next eight points to come from behind and take the set 25-23 and tie the match.
  • BHSU started the third set with four of the first six points that included a kill and a block by Mettler. SD Mines responded by winning seven in a row to take a 9-4 lead. McLeod had two blocks in the next four points to close the gap to 9-8. The Hardrockers then went on a massive 16-8 run to take the third set 25-16.
  • The match got out of hand in the fourth set when SDM went on a 17-4 run to begin the set including a stretch of nine in a row. After, the two team split the next ten points to make it 21-9. The Rockers won four of the next five to take the set 25-10 and the match 3-1.
