Yellow Jackets Split Second Straight Day Versus Host Beavers

MINOT, N.D.- The Yellow Jackets were able to get their second win of the season in incredible comeback fashion and were almost able to pull off another comeback in game two, but ended up splitting with the Minot State Beavers in a very late night set of games that lasted a combined five hours. The Yellow Jackets brought it all the way back to extras in game one and had a chance to walk it off in game two, but fell just short. Transfers Caylee Mann and Delaney Milanowski combined for seven of the teams ten RBIs today.

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 1
  • Jorja Franzwa started out the bottom of the first with a double and then advanced to first on a groundout, she then scored on a groundout as well, which gave Minot a 1-0 lead early in this one.
  • BHSU immediately answered with Caylee Mann hitting a solo home run to lead off the second inning and tie the game at 1-1.
  • The teams couldn't score again until the bottom of the fourth when Anna LaCount led off the inning with a walk. Sarah Misner hit a single to advance LaCount and then a sacrifice bunt by Jessie Henry advanced them to second and third. After a groundout, Maizy Whitlow hit a two-RBI single to give Minot a 3-1 lead.
  • No one scored for the next 1.5 innings, which brought us to the top of the fifth. Reyes Mims was hit by a pitch and then scored on a double by Sammie Kaufman-Warner, who then was thrown out at third trying to stretch a double into a triple. Hernandez answered with a solo home run to make the score 5-3 before the next two batters grounded out.
  • The fifth inning was wild for both sides. BHSU started the fifth inning with a Carly Reyes Mims one-out single. Desi Hernandez hit a two-out double to advance Reyes Mims to third and Mann brought her home with a single. Delaney Milanowksi hit a two-out, two-RBI double that scored Mann and Hernandez to give BHSU their first lead at 4-3. Minot immediately answered back, however, Franzwa doubled to lead off the bottom of the third and made it third on a lineout to center field. After a walk, BHSU was able to get Franzwa out at home on a fielder's choice to make it two outs. Just when the Green and Gold looked like they were going to get out of it, Misner smoked a three-run homer to give MISU a 6-4 lead.
  • MISU held that lead through the sixth inning and into the top of the seventh. Sammie Kaufman-Warner closed the lead to one with a solo leadoff homer in the seventh to make it 6-5. Calley Olson got the next two batters out and then Milanowski hit a single. Brooklyn Theiler pinch ran for her and then immediately scored on a double by Alyssa Wong to tie the game at six. Kaitlyn Geschwill, who had come into pitch for the Yellow Jackets in the previous inning got MISU to go 1-2-3 in the bottom of the seventh and they headed to extras.
  • In the eighth inning, Fouras started on second base due to the ghostrunner rule, and immediately scored when Anna Gietzen had her second career hit for a RBI single. Gietzen made it to second on a groundout and then to third on a wild pitch. Reyes Mims walked and so did Kaufman-Warner to load the bases for Hernandez, who reached on a fielder's choice that got Gietzen out at home. Mann hit a single to score Reyes Mims and gave BHSU an 8-6 lead. In the bottom half, Geschwill struck  out two batters looking and got the other to fly out for a 8-6 win in extras

HOW IT HAPPENED- GAME 2
  • Sarah VanWickler hit a two-out triple in the bottom of the first and then after a walk to Paige Kellogg, Isabelle Anderson hit a double to score VanWickler and give Minot an early 1-0 lead.
  • There was not another run scored until the bottom of the fifth, but the Beavers left five on base during that span. VanWickler began the fifth with a double and then a single by Kellogg moved her to third. Anderson walked to load the bases after Geschwill came in for Goodell and Geschwill allowed a two-RBI single to score VanWickler and Kellogg. Geschwill responded by striking the next three batters out swinging to limit the damage at 3-0.
  • Reyes Mims hit a one-out single in the top of the sixth and then was out on a fielder's choice that allowed Kaufman-Warner to reach. Hernandez then reached on a fielding error by the first basemen, which allowed Kaufman-Warner to get to third and she used smart baserunning to realize no one was covering home and made it all the way to the plate to cut the lead to 3-1. Mann then hit a double to score Hernandez to make it 3-2 and Milanowski hit a single and was thrown out trying to advance to second, but a pinch running Theiler scored in time to tie the game at 3-3. However, that didn't last long. Geschwill walked the first three batters to start the bottom of the sixth and then got the next batter out on a fielder's choice, but allowed a sacrifice fly to Anderson, which scored Taylor Eatherton and gave MISU a 4-3 lead.
  • BHSU put up a fight in the seventh. Wong provided the Yellow Jackets first walk of the game to put a runner on, and then a pinch-hitting Carli Maley hit a double to move Wong to third. Misner was able to get the next two Yellow Jackets to strike out however, which ended the game at 4-3.
