SPEARFISH, S.D. – The Black Hills State University men's and women's track & field teams concluded their final tune-up leading up to the RMAC Indoor Track & Field Championships this past Saturday, winning both the men's and women's team competitions at the Myrle Hansen Open inside the Donald E. Young Center Field House. The Yellow Jacket men's team tallied 195.5 points with seven event victories and a pair of marks/times that ranked second in school history as
Drew Lehman did so in the long jump and
Landon Scalise did so in the 60m dash. On the women's side the Green & Gold tallied 170.33 points with six event victories, highlighted by a 35-year old school record being broken in the long jump by freshman
Avery Marler.
HOW IT HAPPENED – MEN'S TRACK & FIELD
- Landon Scalise notched a pair of career-best times, one after the other in the 60m dash to win the event. He began the day in the prelims with a time of 6.92 and then won the finals with a time of 6.90 to move into a tie for second all-time in school history. Also in the prelims of the event was Jude Guevara, Dawson Lindeen, and Isaac Job who clocked times of 7.30, 7.34, and 7.42 respectively for 11th, 13th, and 17th place.
- The pair of Flynn Johnston and Logan Boyd recorded top-10 times in the 400m dash, recording times of 51.20 for second place and 55.22 for eighth place respectively. Boyd's time in the event set a new career-best time.
- The Yellow Jackets went 1-2 in the 800m run, as Evan Smith and Landrum Wiley clocked times of 1:54.85 and 1:56.42 respectively. Adding a fifth place finish and time of 1:57.70 was Caden Strasser, and in 13th place was Anthony Ackerman with a time of 2:08:41.
- In the mile, the Yellow Jackets swept the top-4 placings as Wiley turned in a time of 4:20.53 for first, Jaxon Straus notched a time of 4:26.03 for second, Ackerman tallied a time of 4:27.70 for third, and Dominic Eberle recorded a time of 4:27.87 for fourth. Also adding top-10 times were Conor Phipps in sixth place with a time of 4:34.26 and Emmett Swartzentruber who was seventh with a time of 4:36.74. Rounding out the lineup in the event for the Green & Gold was Gage Kuhlenbeck who was 11th with a time of 4:44.03 and Levi Smith who was 16th with a time of 4:53.23. The freshmen quartet of Ackerman, Eberle, Phipps, and Kuhlenbeck all posted season-best times.
- The Yellow Jackets took four top-5 finishes and five top-10 finishes total in the 3,000m run. They were led by Turner Christians who ran away with a winning time of 8:48.29, while Thomas Oylear was third with a time of 9:00.60, Sean Shipp was fourth with a time of 9:02.73, Straus was fifth with a time of 9:05.76, and Alberto Spotted was seventh with a time of 9:27.69.
- The lone Yellow Jacket in the 60m hurdles was Jayden Curtis, who ran to a winning time of 8.68.
- The lone Yellow Jacket in the high jump was Trennan Pearson, who cleared 1.86m (6' 1.25") for fourth place.
- Led by Chase Maher, who secured the win in the pole vault by clearing 4.80m (15' 9"), the Yellow Jackets saw three tally top-5 finishes in the event. Clearing 4.40m (14' 5.25") for third place was Dawson Lindeen and clearing 4.25m (13' 11.25") was Jeremy Harms. Harms' mark was a new career-best.
- Drew Lehman added to what has already been one of the best seasons in program history for the jumps, as he made the jump to number two in school history in the long jump, recording a career-best mark of 7.16m (23' 6") to win the event. Adding to a 1-2-3 finish for the Yellow Jackets in the event, Seth Wilson was second with a jump of 6.63m (21' 9") and Javin Walker was third with a mark of 6.37m (20' 10.75"). Also recording top-10 marks was Pearson who was fifth with a mark of 6.06m (19' 10.75") and Curtis who was sixth with a mark of 6.01m (19' 8.75").
- Walker led a trio of Yellow Jackets in the triple jump, posting a third place finish with a mark of 12.85m (42' 2"). Also in the triple jump, Guevara added a fourth place finish with a mark of 12.49m (40' 11.75") and Curtis was fifth with a mark of 12.37m (40' 7").
- The lone Yellow Jacket in the shot put, Matthew LoFaso notched a seventh place finish with a toss of 13.64m (44' 9").
- In the weight throw, the trio of Ryan Baker, LoFaso, and Barren Yellow Bird collected top-10 finishes, highlighted by a third place finish from Baker as he recorded a mark of 16.33m (53' 7"). The pair of LoFaso and Yellow Bird finished sixth and eighth respectively with marks of 14.25m (46' 9") and 13.59m (44' 7").

HOW IT HAPPENED – WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD
- Freshman Sophia Kennedy was the lone Yellow Jacket to compete in the 60m dash, posting a time of 8.55 for ninth place in the prelims.
- In the 200m dash, the Yellow Jackets saw a 1-2 finish from Avery Marler and Saraya Afrank, who clocked times of 26.50 and 26.71 respectively. Others competing in the event included Alivia Weathers and Kennedy who were 12th and 15th place with times of 28.66 and 29.40.
- The pair of Jillian Brennan and Madison Zander clocked top-5 times in the 800m run, running to times of 2:23.49 for second place and 2:27.01 for fifth place respectively. Additionally, Morgan Sumption recorded a 12th place finish with a time of 2:40.00.
- The duo of Nicole Clark and Sierra Hopp ran to top-10 times in the miles, tallying times of 5:32.34 for seventh place and 5:33.94 for eighth place. Freshman Jacey Wipf recorded a season-best time of 5:47.73 for 12th place.
- The Yellow Jackets took four of the top-5 places and six of the top-10 places in the 3,000m run. Leading the way for the Green & Gold was Emma Hofmeister in second place with a time of 10:30.54, while Mason Berg was third with a time of 10:35.42, Ava Allen was fourth with a time of 10:44.50, and Abigail Robberson was fifth with a time of 10:59.49. The pair of Hopp and Payton Sheehan finished seventh and eighth respectively with times of 11:11.27 and 12:10.34. Sheehan's time in the event was a new career-best.
- Black Hills State went 1-2-3 in the 60m hurdles, as Wolfe, Weathers, and Lauryn Bennett clocked times of 9.43, 9.60, and 9.95 respectively. Then Alessandra Broussard rounded out the top-5 with a time of 10.19. Wolfe's time in the event was a new career-best and ranks ninth in school history.
- The lone Yellow Jacket competing in the high jump was Weathers, who cleared a career-best height of 1.45m (4' 9") for second place.
- In the pole vault, the pair of Erin Weibel and Brekkan Lockhart recorded a 1-2 finish by clearing heights of 3.50m (11' 5.75") and 3.35m (10' 11.75") respectively. Additionally, Hope Bryant notched a fourth place finish by clearing 3.20m (10' 6").
- The highlight of the day came as Marler broke a 35-year old school record that stood since 1991 as she notched a career-best mark of 5.63m (18' 5.75") to win the long jump. Joining her in the top-5 of the event was Afrank with a fourth place finish and mark of 5.39m (17' 8.25") and Eng who was fifth with a mark of 5.10m (16' 8.75"). Afranks mark, also a career-best and top-10 mark in school history ranks sixth all-time. The mark for Eng was a career-best.
- Eng, the lone triple jumper for the Yellow Jackets, secured a win in the event with a mark of 10.28m (33' 8.75").
- The pair of Hanah Sullivan and Cassidy Goddard posted a fourth and fifth place finish respectively in the shot put, notching marks of 12.91m (42' 4.25") and 11.54m (37' 10.5").
- Goddard captured the event win in the weight throw, posting a toss of 16.30m (53' 5.75"), while Sullivan was third in the event with a mark of 14.91m (48' 11").
