LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. - The Yellow Jackets broke a record that was set at last year's Swan Memorial tournament. They set the new mark for the lowest 36-hole score in BHSU's D2 era after shooting a 650 (+90) over the two day tournament. The Yellow Jackets put together rounds of 327 (+47) and 323 (+43) en route to an eighth place finish at the SMSU Classic, where they fell one spot from their position yesterday after they were passed by Fort Hays State and Nebraska Kearney (B) but they also jumped UMary. The Yellow Jackets were led by a 76 (+6) from
Abbi Beld today, which is top five in program's D2 era as well.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Abbi Beld put together a 76 (+6) today and finished 156 (+16) in a tie for 20th place. Her 76 (+6) puts her in a tie for fifth in BHSU's D2 era for single round score. She started her round today by paring ten of the first 11 holes to only sit +1 after 11. She then birdied 12 to move to even par and made par on three of the last six holes to shoot that number. Beld finished the day with 13 pars and a birdie, which led to her placing the highest of anyone on the team.
- Shelbi Gardner turned a 79 (+9) yesterday into an 81 (+11) today to shoot 160 (+20) and finish in a tie for 24th. Gardner started the day with three straight pars before finishing with a 42 (+6) on the front nine. She then started the back nine five over through her first six before finishing with three straight pars to end the round and shoot that 81.
- Makaela Swanson bounced back in a big way after her 86 (+16) yesterday. She turned it around to shoot an 80 (+10) today and finish at 166 (+26) to sit in a tie for 42nd. Swanson made four pars on the front nine, but shot a 43 (+7) on that half. She then was even through her first six holes on the back nine after making a birdie on 15 and finished the round with three straight bogeys to shoot 80 (+10). She had eight pars and a birdie today.
- Leyni Stavola looked to be continuing her great pace after making a birdie on two with pars surrounding it, but after a par on five, Stavola made an unfortunate 11 on hole six, which led to her shooting a 48 (+12) on the front nine, but she kicked it back into gear on the back nine making a birdie on ten and five other pars including each of the last three holes to shoot 39 (+5) on that side en route to shooting a 169 (+29) for the tournament and a 87 (+17) today to finish in a solo 45th place.
- Olivia McCandless put together an 85 (+15) on the round today to put her at 170 (+30) for the tournament and sitting in a tie for 46th. McCandless like Stavola also struggled on the front nine today making three pars around an eight on hole eight. She completely turned it around on the back nine as well making no worse than bogey on any hole and only making four bogeys for a 38 (+4) on the back to keep her in it.
- Katie Jorgenson shot an 86 (+16) today and that put her at 177 (+37) for the tournament after her unfortunate 91 (+21) yesterday. Jorgenson finished in a tie for 58th and like the previous two girls struggled on the front nine making a 46 (+10) on that half. She finished that nine with three pars on her last four holes, which led to her making five more on the back nine which led her to a 40 (+6) on the back nine. She ended up with eight pars on the round and was a massive part of a really strong back nine for BHSU.
