RAPID CITY, S.D. - The Yellow Jackets struggled to maintain their momentum on a windy day at one of the toughest courses in the state. BHSU shot 357 (+69) en route to a fourth place finish after the first day in Rapid City. The Golf Club at Red Rocks was challenging today and saw BHSU really struggling early as they combined to shoot +26 in the first four holes, but some good bounce backs in the later half of the round kept BHSU ahead of Minot State and in fourth position.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED

• Shelbi Gardner led the way for BHSU as she sits in a tie for seventh place after shooting an 84 (+12) today. Gardner was the top golfer for BHSU today and was looking incredibly strong for most of the day. An early birdie at four put her back to even and she sat at only +7 thru 15 holes. However, a rare triple bogey on 16 and back-to-back bogeys to end her day dropped her to +12 for the round and a 44 (+8) on the back.
• Katie Jorgenson held on to the 80s today as she shot an 89 (+17) in the first round today that included a 43 (+7) on the front nine. She was playing bogey golf early on as she sat +8 thru 8, but had a strong middle portion where she went +2 over the next six holes and finished in solo 16^th place. She made one birdie on nine that got her strong stretch started as well as five pars
• Leyni Stavola shot a 91 (+19) to finish third on the team in the first round and sit in 18^th place. After the first hole of the day, she settled down and only went +4 the rest of the front nine to shoot a 44 (+8) and that included a really crucial birdie on seven. She started the back nine with a bogey and a par, before a rough finishing stretch led to a par on 18 to end the day.
• Abbi Beld was next on the team as she finished in 20^th place with a 93 (+21). Beld's started the round off rough, but after the first four holes and outside of hole #11, Beld shot +7 in the other 13 holes including a nice birdie on 14 and a final seven hole stretch where she shot +3 in the final seven holes, which led to her shooting a 43 (+7) on the back nine.
• Olivia McCandless was next with a 95 (+23) to finish in a tie for 21^st. She had two pars on the day and had a front-nine score of 47 (+11). She actually did a good job of limiting big numbers only making worse than bogey on four holes. She pared the first hole and then pared hole eight.
