SPEARFISH, S.D. - The Mark Larscheid Memorial Golf Tournament celebrated its 25th year of remembrance of a Yellow Jacket Hall of Famer on July 3rd. Hosted at Spearfish Canyon Country Club, the event saw 148 individuals take to the course honoring Mark Larscheid, who held the South Dakota state high school track & field record in the 110-yard hurdles for more than 50 years as he ran to a time of 14.1 seconds in 1969. He then went on to attend Black Hills State College (Class of 1973), where he would go on to be a Hall of Fame athlete in the sports of both football and track & field. While competing for the Yellow Jackets, he was the 1973 South Dakota Intercollegiate Conference champion in the 120-yard high hurdles with a time of 14.6 seconds.
Following his passing in August of 2000, Mark's family, including his wife Mary, and children, Shane, Summer, and Slade, have committed to honoring his legacy with the annual Mark Larscheid Memorial Golf Tournament and a scholarship fund. The scholarship was first awarded in 2002 and since then now 24 men's and women's track & field student-athletes have been recipients. Receiving the scholarship for 2026-27 is Chase Maher, a Rapid City native and junior pole vaulter. With the donation from this year's tournament totaling $11,000, the Mark Larscheid Memorial Endowment has grown to over $150,000.
"The weather didn't dampen the spirit of the Mark Larscheid Memorial Golf Tournament," stated Mary Larscheid-Christensen. "For the past 25 years, this tournament has been about so much more than golf. It has become a cherished tradition that brings together our family, friends, alumni, and community to celebrate Mark's life and the values he embodied. Watching so many people come together year after year to honor his memory, while supporting his scholarship for Black Hills State University Track & Field is incredibly meaningful to our family. We are deeply grateful to everyone who has participated, volunteered, sponsored, and supported this event over the years. Because of their generosity, Mark's legacy continues to create opportunities for student-athletes and inspire future generations."
The 26th annual Mark Larscheid Memorial Golf Tournament is scheduled for Saturday, July 3, 2027, at the Spearfish Canyon Country Club.
