RAPID CITY, S.D.- Despite a very good second set to tie the match, BHSU was unable to pull out the victory in the opening matchup of the Black Hills Brawl Rivalry Series presented by Ford. The Jackets fell 3-1 to the now 11-win Hardrockers. BHSU got great performances from Zoie Husman, Carsyn Mettler, and their setters, but were unable to grab late set points. BHSU now falls down 2 points to zero in the Rivalry Series.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• BHSU started the first set taking each of the first three points on South Dakota Mines attack errors. The Hardrockers answered with six straight points that gave them the 6-3 lead. The Yellow Jackets took three out of four to tie the game at seven and after some heavy back and forth the game kept staying tied at 11, 12, 13,14, and 15. SDM then went on a 10-2 run to take the first set 25-17 and go up 1-0 in the match.
• The second set started close with the two teams tied at four. The Green and Gold would take four out of five with two kills by Mettler to go up 8-5. After that the lead never got further then four and never got close until a mid-set charge by SDM put them within one, two Elena Atkinson aces and a kill by Mianna Cardenas helped a 4-0 Yellow Jacket run as BHSU took a 16-11 lead. The Rockers went on a 6-2 run to cut the lead to 18-17. BHSU pulled away again on a 4-1 run that had kills by Peyton McLeod and Izzy Saiki to go up 22-18. SDM went on a 4-2 run to make it 24-22 before Zoie Husman got the kill to take set two at and tie the match at 1-1.
• The third set was all SDM. With the game tied at 3-3, the Hardrockers would go on an 8-2 run to take an 11-5 lead and then after a couple of BHSU points, they would go on a 14-6 run to take the third set 25-13 and make it a 2-1 match.
• The fourth set was another back and forth one. BHSU started the set strong going up 9-4 on two kills by Husman and another by Saiki. However Spearfish native, Maria Bauman, would lead SDM on a 6-0 run with two aces as they took a 10-9 lead. After a 3-1 run to take the lead back at 12-11, the game would remain tied at 12, 13, and 14 before Mines would go on a 5-1 run to make it 19-15. The Jackets would take three straight points with an ace from Husman and a block from McLeod and Cardenas to cut the lead to one. With the score at 21-19, Mines would take four of the next six to win 25-21 and take the match 3-0.

UP NEXT
The Yellow Jackets will be at home next weekend where they will face the reigning NCAA Champions, the #24 MSU Denver Roadrunners, on Friday and then will face the RMAC preseason favorites, UCCS Mountain Lions, on Saturday.
