PREP: Ranked as a 3-star prospect by 247Sports, Mao was a 4-year letterwinner and starter, and 3-year team captain for head coach Romeo Pellum at Millikan High School. The 2-time Sunset and Moore League Offensive Lineman of the Year anchored the Rams o-line as they went 26-19 over his prep career, qualifying for the CIF Southern Section Playoffs on three occasions. He closed out his MHS career as the team posted an 8-3 mark on the season and went to the CIF Southern Section Division 3 Football Championships as the offense averaged 46.4 points, 175.8 passing yards, 265.4 rushing yards, and 441.2 total yards per game. He’s also earned recognition a 3-time first team all-league selection and a 2-time all-state honoree. Kapono is the son of Steve and Kelly Mao, and he has three siblings, Skyler, Sonny, and Kensi.
