Spearfish, S.D. – The Black Hills State University volleyball team split during the second day of competition at the Johnson and Wales Tournament. The Yellow Jackets defeated Sterling (Kan.) 3-1 in the first match-up of the day and ended the tournament with a loss to S.D. Mines 1-3.
The Yellow Jackets defeated Sterling 25-14, 22-25, 25-17 and 25-18. Black Hills State once again had a strong day hitting the ball with four student-athletes hitting over .250 led by freshman Holly Hamlin who hit .412 and finished with nine kills. Junior Kylee lamb finished the contest hitting .342 and earned 12 kills. Caitlin Templeton and Darbi Yost finished .292 and .250 respectively.
Black Hills State fell to S.D. Mines 25-11, 25-21, 24-26 and 25-18. The Yellow Jackets struggled hitting the ball against the Hardrockers. Hamlin once again led the offensive strike hitting .385 but Black Hills State hit .043 as a team and committed 34 errors and earned only 40 kills.
The Yellow Jackets will return to action Monday, October 10 as they play their first home match up the season against Chadron State, at the Donald E. Young Center in Spearfish at 7 p.m.
