Tucson, Ariz. – The Black Hills State University softball team picked up its first win of the season on Tuesday in Tucson, Ariz.
"Our offense finally opened up in the second game," said head coach Amy Gurney. "We struggled in the first game all around. It was good to see the girls rebound and refocus for the second game though and pick up the first win of the season."
The Yellow Jackets fell in the first game of the day to Olivet Nazarene 11-0 in five innings. The Yellow Jackets were only able to manage two hits in the game, one from Aleishia Giesey and one from Meagan Bell.
Black Hills State bounced back to knock off Calumet 10-2 in six innings. Katie Wagner picked up the victory. Wagner gave up only three hits and struck out seven in the game. Wagner also was effective from the batter's box. She was 2-for-2 with a homerun. Regina Thaler was 3-for-4 on the day knocking in three runs. Karly Ackerman was also 3-for-4 with from the plate and picked up two 2 RBIs. Lenaya Vigil had two RBIs and was 2-for-4 in the game. Meagan Bell was 3-for-4 against Clumet and also had two RBIs. The Yellow Jackets had 15 hits in the game.
Gurney stated, "We got into the batter's box with confidence and hit the ball hard to put pressure on the defense. At this point in the tournament we have learned a lot and I see improvement in our team already."
The Yellow Jackets will have a junior varsity team square-off against Minnesota West Community College on Wednesday at 12 noon MT.
