Spearfish, S.D. – The Black Hills State volleyball team fell to the University of Colorado - Colorado Springs on Saturday afternoon at the Donald E. Young Center.
The Yellow Jackets lost in four sets (23-25, 26-24, 17-25, 18-25) to the Mountain Lions. Black Hills State jumped out to an early lead in the first set behind some impressive serving from Darbi Yost. The set came down to the wire and saw the Jackets fall by just two points.
In the second set, Black Hills State again came out firing, gaining a 9-3 advantage in the opening minutes of the set. The teams would trade blows for much of the set, but a Meghan Sipe kill sealed the deal with the Jackets on top, 26-24.
The Yellow Jackets battled throughout the third and fourth sets, but could not gain the upper hand on the Mountain Lions. They lost the third and fourth sets 17-25 and 18-25, respectively.
"Colorado Springs rattled our cage on serve receive. Darbi did a nice job delivering the ball, but we were forced out of our system and struggled to strike on all cylinders offensively," said Head Coach Sally Nichols.
The Jackets saw an impressive performance from Caitlin Templeton on Saturday. The 6-1 junior from Rapid City recorded 15 kills on 35 attempts, finishing the game with a hitting percentage of .314.
"Caitlin Templeton had a nice match and continues to dominate over, around, and through our opponents" added Nichols.
Amy O'Neill had a solid performance offensively, recording 13 kills on 47 attempts. Meghan Sipe added nine kills to go along with her 12 digs, and Yost recorded 41 assists during the contest.
The Jackets will finish their season at home next weekend, as they take on Metro State College at 7 pm on Friday and Regis University at 4 pm on Saturday.
