Box Score 2 Pueblo, Colo. – The Black Hills State University softball team started their spring season today, competing in the NSIC/RMAC Crossover Tournament in Pueblo, Colo. In the Yellow Jackets first match-up of the day, Black Hills State fell to host CSU-Pueblo by a score of 0-8 in four and a half innings. Black Hills State then went on to lose to Colorado Mesa in their second game of the day by a final score of 14-6 in five innings.
In the first contest of the day the Yellow Jackets recorded only two hits, one by junior Allie Alverson and sophomore Kelsie Chambers. Both Alverson and Chambers each recorded a put-out in the contest. Black Hills State committed two errors in the contest. Senior pitcher Katie Wagner was tagged with the loss. Wagner pitched three innings and gave up six runs on five hits, and also recorded three strike-outs. Junior pitcher Nikki Chacon pitched one inning and gave up two runs on one hit, and recorded two strike-outs.
Black Hills State had a better showing and was able to find some offense in their second game of the day. The Yellow Jackets swung the sticks well, scoring six runs on 10 hits. The Yellow Jackets had the lead after three innings before giving up two runs in the fourth inning and seven runs in the fifth inning. Senior pitcher Katie Wagner was again credited with the loss from the mound. Black Hills State gave up 14 runs on 12 hits and two errors.
The Yellow Jackets will return to action Saturday, February 18 at 10:00 a.m. MT as they square off against University of Colorado-Colorado Springs in the second day of the NSIC/RMAC Crossover Tournament. Black Hills State will then follow up in their second game of the day as they meet up with RMAC opponent University of Nebraska-Kearney at 2:00 p.m. MT.
