Black Hills State University Softball Splits with Regis

Spearfish, S.D. – The Black Hills State University softball team split with Regis (Colo.) in their first of two days of double-headers against the Rangers. The Yellow Jackets fell in the first game by a score of 0-7, but rallied in the second game coming away with the 9-4 victory.

The Yellow Jackets were unable to score any runs in the first game, but recorded seven hits led by sophomore catcher Lenaya Vigil who was the only Black Hills State player to record two hits in the contest.

Senior pitcher Katie Wagner was tagged with the loss, she pitched a complete game giving up seven runs (five earned) on nine hits with a walk and nine strike-outs, including her 400th career strike-out. Wagner is the only Black Hills State University pitcher to reach 400 strike-outs.

The Yellow Jacket offense was firing on all cylinders in the second match-up of the day as Black Hills State was able to record 14 hits and come away with the 9-4 victory to improve to 7-35 overall and 5-28 in the RMAC.

Black Hills State was led offensively by sophomore Kelsie Chambers who recorded one run and four hits with three RBI in four at-bats and recorded two put-outs and one assist from her third base position. Freshman Nia Shumpert and junior Allie Alverson each recorded two hits and scored two runs in the contest.

Junior Nikki Chacon pitched 3.2 innings for the Yellow Jackets giving up three runs (one earned) on five hits. Wagner returned in relief in the second game and is credited with the save, Wagner pitched 3.1 innings and gave up one run on five hits. Wagner recorded 12 strike-outs on the afternoon bringing her career total to 407.

The Yellow Jackets will return to action tomorrow, as they finish their RMAC schedule with a double-header against Regis, game times are set for 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. MT.
