SPEARFISH, S.D. - The Yellow Jackets women's basketball team wasted no time on Sunday afternoon as they tipped-off versus the Colorado School of Mines Orediggers (2-5, 1-2 RMAC) after junior guard, Chesley Biegler, ripped off eight-straight points to give the Jackets a 22-point, 34-12, lead with five minutes left in the first half.
Biegler led the offensive attack for the Jackets that saw their biggest lead of the day come in the middle of the second half as they led 57-30 with just over 12 minutes to play in the game. BHSU pushed the tempo all game long with aggressive play on both ends of the court on way to a 73-53 victory.Â
The win gives the Jackets their second conference win in a row after beating Colorado Christian the night before on Saturday, 66-54. BHSU now moves to 3-4 overall and 2-2 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play.
Biegler finished the game with a team-high 12 points and three assists after shooting 4-of-6 from the field including two 3-pt shots. Redshirt freshman, Courtney Patterson, came off the bench to score 10 points as the Jackets' second leading scorer. Senior, Calli Bechtel, finished 4-of-7 from the field for nine points and she grabbed four rebounds to go with one steal.
BHSU shot an impressive 53.3-percent in the first half before finishing 29-of-55 (52.7%) as a team overall. The three-pointers were dropping for the Jackets, unlike previous contests of late, as they got back on track to shoot 47-percent on 8-of-17 three-point shots.Â
Freshman, Taylor Trohkimoinen, made her second start in-a-row in her young career as she finished with nine points on 4-of-6 shooting. Junior Cassidy Kotelman led the Jackets with five rebounds to go with her seven points and three assists on a team-high 28 minutes.
The Jackets used a swarming defensive attack all day as they forced CSM to 23 turnovers. Biegler led the team with three steals, as Shanna Halalilo and Gabby Haefs had two steals apiece. The Jackets defense forced the Orediggers to just 7-of-25 (28%) shooting in the first half and zero made 3-pt shots on seven attempts before finishing the game with just two made three-pointers after 15 tries (13.3%).
The next game for the Jackets will be on Friday, Jan. 20, 2014 versus Metro State at 5:30 p.m. from the Young Center.
