Box Score 2 SPEARFISH, S.D. – The N.M. Highlands University Cowgirl softball team won both games over the Yellow Jackets (1-18, 1-13 RMAC) for the second day in a row to finish off the weekend of play taking all four games.
While taking early leads in both games on Sunday, NMHU won game one 7-2 and game two after five innings by the score of 12-4.
GAME 1
After a relatively quiet first two innings, the Jackets came back from an NMHU homer by Jessica Brink to take the lead, 2-1, after C Erica Everson had a two RBI double that scored 2B Katie Campo and SS Ryan Cook.
An inning later, the Cowgirls scored four innings to retake the lead when Annie Reynolds cleared the bases on a three RBI double. Reynolds later scored in the inning after pitcher Jacquelyn Wood reached after a BHSU error.
Reynolds also singled to score two more runs to help her team pad their lead in the fifth inning. She finished 3-for-4 with the game-high five RBIs and one run scored. For the Yellow Jackets, Cook finished 3-for-4 on the day with a run scored. Campo also scored a run and went 2-for-4.
Pitching for the Jackets was Brittany Geersen who went 3.2 innings and was charged for four earned runs on eight hits before being replaced by sophomore Kaitlin Farrar. Farrar went 3.1 innings and gave up two earned runs on four hits.
NMHU's Wood pitched the complete game giving up two earned runs on nine Jacket hits, while striking out three and walking one.
GAME 2
The Yellow Jackets took a 1-0 lead after the first inning in the second game of Sunday's doubleheader after a 2B Katie Campo groundout to first allowed LF Nia Shumpert to score from third base.
The Jackets' lead was short-lived as the Cowgirls exploded for an impressive 11 run second inning, which included two hits that scored multiple runs for NMNU.
Savanah Eckhardt was the starting pitcher for the Yellow Jackets as she went one inning and was charged for five earned runs with one strikeout. Both Stefanie Witman and Kaitlin Farrar closed the game out while giving up four runs and eight hits combined.
The NMHU second baseman, Dominique Padilla, led her team with three RBIs after going 2-of-3 from the plate with one run scored. Eight other Cowgirls had at least one hit in the game.
Jessica Brink was effective on the mound once again for NMHU after pitching all five innings and giving up four earned runs on four hits with five strikeouts. Shumpert went 2-for-3 with the one run scored in the first inning to lead the Jackets.
Rebecca Green also had an RBI for BHSU after doubling in the second inning that allowed C Sara Schmid to score. Cook also had an RBI double in the second to hit home RF Katherine Drake who reached on an error earlier in the inning.
The next games for the Jackets will come on the road as they travel to play at UC-Colorado Springs in a weekend series on April 4-5, 2014.
