Box Score 2 SPEARFISH, S.D. – The Black Hills State University softball seniors – Ryan Cook, Sara Schmid, Brook Grant – took to the field for their final weekend of play at home on Friday beginning with Chadron State College, followed by a game versus Colorado Mesa University.
In the first game of Friday's double-header, CSC took the victory 10-2 in six innings, as CMU needed five innings to defeat the Jackets (2-29, 1-23 RMAC) in the third game of the day, 14-4. Both CSC and CMU squared off in the second game.
GAME 1
The Yellow Jackets were within striking distance after the first four innings as CSC held onto a 4-2 lead. However in the fifth inning, CSC broke open the game and scored six runs to take the commanding eight run lead.
Pitching for the Jackets was Savanah Eckhardt, who also helped herself offensively by picking up the only two RBIs of the game for the Jackets in the second inning when she hit a two-run homerun over the leftfield fence that scored SS Ryan Cook.
Eckhardt finished 2-for-2 from the plate with one run scored. She also was the losing pitching on the day after going five innings and giving up eight earned runs.
CSC used the arm of pitcher, Kylee Polsley, to limit the Jackets' offensive effort. Polsley picked up her twelfth victory of the season after going five innings and grabbing six strikeouts. Leading the charge from the plate for CSC were CF Rebecca Wetsch and Courtney Lecher who both finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
GAME 2
The Yellow Jackets squared off versus the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference's 2nd-place team in CMU, and managed to take an early 2-0 lead after the first two innings.
The Jackets got out in front thanks to the bat of BHSU's power hitter in 2B Katie Campo, who hit a two-run homer to left-center that knocked home SS Ryan Cook. Campo now leads the Jackets with five homeruns and 21 RBIs on the season.
Pitching for the Yellow Jackets was Stefanie Witman, who held the high scoring CMU offense two zero runs after two. But in the third and fourth innings, CMU got back to form as they combined for 11 runs before picking up three more in the fifth to close the game out in five innings. Witman went four innings and was charged for eight earned runs on 11 hits.
Five CMU players had multiple hit days and three players hit homers as DH Jessica Severinsen led the charge after going 3-of-4 with six RBIs on the day that included a homerun and a double.
On the mound for CMU was winning pitcher, Ashley Pulido, who picked up her ninth win on the year while pitching all five innings and giving up four earned runs on four Jacket hits to go with six strikeouts.
Tomorrow the Jackets will close out the 2014 season at home on Family Day beginning at 10 a.m. versus CMU. After CSC and CMU play at noon, the Jackets will take on CSC beginning at 2 p.m. at the BHSU Softball Complex.
