Box Score 2 SPEARFISH, S.D. – For the second day in a row, the Yellow Jacket softball team (2-31, 1-25 RMAC) hosted some of the top teams in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference in 2nd-place, Colorado Mesa University and 4th-place, Chadron State College.
In the first game at 10 a.m. on Saturday, which also was Family Day, the Jackets came up short versus CMU, 10-0, and then again lost to CSC in the afternoon match-up by a score of 6-2.
GAME 1
CMU pitcher, Jessica Severinsen, showed why she currently leads the RMAC with a 3.05 after she pitched a five inning two-hit shutout to begin the day. The CMU offense also got to work early in the first as they opened up the game with a grand slam homer over the left-center wall by RF Sarah Phillis to make it 4-0.
The two hits of the game for the Yellow Jackets came by senior centerfielder, Brooke Grant, in the bottom of the third inning that got through the left side of the infield as 3B Alexis Shaffer grabbed a single in the fourth.
CMU managed to hit two more homeruns in the game that scored multiple runs each time to stretch their lead in order to close the game out in five innings. BHSU's Stefanie Witman went three innings in the game after getting the start on the mound as she allowed three earned runs on two hits.
GAME 2
After CSC beat CMU with a walk-off single to take the victory 4-3 in the noon game, the Eagles carried that momentum over to the final game of the weekend versus the Jackets.
CSC got on the board three times in the top of the first inning as 3B Kaite Longo hit an RBI double to right field, which was then followed by DH Jessica Eaton's RBI double down the third base line.
After CSC added multiple homeruns to take a 6-0 lead into the bottom of the fourth, the Jackets finally got on the board thanks to a double-steal when senior CF Brooke Grant stole second and senior RF Sara Schmid stole home. Schmid finished 2-for-3 from the plate in the game and had three stolen bases to give her four on the day overall.
The Jackets' second run came after 2B Katie Campo scored when SS Ryan Cook reached on an error after lining a ball the CMU's left fielder. CMU used the arm of Aryn Grywusiewicz, who pitched a complete game and surrendered one earn run on six hits. Stefanie Witman pitched three innings for the Jackets and Kaitlin Farrar went four innings to closeout the game.
The Yellow Jackets will go back on the road on Monday, Apr. 21, for a doubleheader versus Dickinson State University beginning at 1 p.m.
