SPEARFISH, S.D. – Behind 16 kills from Meghan Sipe, the Black Hills State University volleyball team returned to the win column with a 3-1 victory over Adams State University Saturday in the Young Center.
Sipe was just one kill shy of a career best while Holly Hamlin added 13 kills and a .545 hitting percentage. Danielle Torpey had 14 kills with a .444 hitting percentage.
The Yellow Jackets took the first two sets 25-17 and 25-21 and narrowly lost the third set 25-23. The fourth set saw the Yellow Jackets take control of the match 25-21.
In the fourth set, the Yellow Jackets seized control after the score was knotted at 12-12, scoring the next three points. A block from Shelby Mayer and Brynn Eckhardt, followed by an attacking error from the Grizzlies set the Yellow Jackets up with a 14-12 lead. Sipe then had one of her three blocks to continue the BHSU run.
Black Hills State then pushed the lead to 20-15 before ASU attempted a late rally, closing eth game to 21-19 and again at 22-20. But the Yellow Jackets prove too strong scoring its 23rd and 24th points from Hamlin, first on a kill then on a service ace.
Adams State received one final point before Mayer closed the match with a kill, assisted from Eckhardt.
The Yellow Jackets step out of RMAC action on Tuesday to face South Dakota Mines in Rapid City, South Dakota. The match is slated to begin at 7 p.m.
