SPEARFISH, S.D.—The Black Hills State University volleyball team entered Saturday evening's showdown with Regis University in the midst of their first winning-streak of the 2015 season. The Rangers happened to be in the midst of their largest winning streak of the season as well. Regis' three-game winning streak includes victories over Western State, CSU-Pueblo and South Dakota Mines.
The Yellow Jackets were searching for their first three-game winning streak since last season when they defeated Chadron State (2) and Colorado Christian. The Rangers crashed those dreams at the Young Center on Saturday evening with a 3-0 win over the Yellow Jackets.
BHSU falls to 6-11, 3-6 RMAC while Regis improves to 10-7, 7-1 RMAC.
Regis 3, Yellow Jackets 0
The Yellow Jackets kept things tight out of the gates in set one. BHSU held leads of 1-0, 9-8, and 10-9 before a BHSU service error tied the set 10-10.
The Rangers and Yellow Jackets traded attack errors to make things 11-11 before the set became one-sided. Maggie Steward registered two kills while Diamond RidleyPierce and Rachael McCue each added one to help the Rangers cruise to a 15-11 lead.
Steward added two more kills the rest of the set to help Regis secure a 25-14 win in set one.
The Yellow Jackets took leads of 7-6 and 8-6 in set two before Regis University came back. A Cedar Bellows kill followed by a pair of BHSU attack errors gave the Rangers a 9-8 lead.
The Yellow Jackets responded with a Brynn Eckhardt kill and three Ranger errors that propelled them to a 12-9 lead. It proved to be short-lived as a pair of Katie Klein kills tied the game 13-13.
Two more Regis attack errors gave BHSU a 15-13 lead, but Bellows and Steward each notched two kills to help Regis come from behind and take a 21-16 lead. The Yellow Jackets couldn't respond to the superb play of Bellows and Steward as they fell 25-19 in set two.
Set three didn't see BHSU hold a lead at any point en route to a 25-21 loss.
Torpey led the Yellow Jackets with seven kills.
BHSU will return to action on Friday, October 16 at Western State. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
