VB: Mountain Lions Trip Yellow Jackets in Five Sets

COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO.—Home cooking is what the doctor prescribed for the Black Hills State University volleyball team when they snapped a four-game losing skid with a 3-0 win over New Mexico Highlands on September 25. BHSU couldn't follow that up in a 3-1 loss to Western New Mexico on September 26.

The Yellow Jackets have to figure out how to win on the road at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs on Friday night to avoid such a losing streak.  Their first conference victory a week ago coupled with Lacy Stevens' RMAC Defensive Player of the Week honor may be the recipe to help BHSU over the edge.

It didn't prove to be enough as the Yellow Jackets fell to UCCS 3-2.

BHSU falls to 4-9, 1-4 RMAC while the Mountain Lions improve to 10-6, 4-1 RMAC.

UCCS 3, Yellow Jackets 2

Confidence was evident from the early stages of set one on behalf of the Yellow Jackets as they led as much as 11-6. That fueled the Mountain Lions as they stormed back and tied the match 12-12, paced by three consecutive BHSU attack errors.

UCCS never surrendered the lead from that point and locked a 25-21 win in set one.

A pair of Mountain Lion attack errors out of the gates in set two helped tie the match 3-3. BHSU jumped to a 6-3 lead on back-to-back-to-back UCCS attack errors.  Alyssa Brinton's three kills helped the Mountain Lions regain a 13-10 lead.

Cassidy Steele responded with three kills that helped BHSU tie the set 14-14. The remainder of set two saw three different lead changes until a Danielle Torpey kill gave BHSU the lead for good at 23-22. A UCCS attack error followed by a Steele kill secured a 25-22 set-two win for the Yellow Jackets.

Taylor Hamilton and Kim Catlett each registered three kills to propel UCCS to a 10-6 lead in set three.  The Yellow Jackets slowly came back and tied the Mountain Lions 13-13.

BHSU didn't trail for the rest of the match as Torpey's five kills down the stretch locked up a 25-22 win in set three, which gave them a 2-1 lead in the match.

The Yellow Jackets couldn't build off wins in sets two and three as they fell to the Mountain Lions 25-22 in set four, and 15-10 in set five.

Torpey and Steele each registered career-highs with 22 and 12 kills respectively.

The Yellow Jackets will return to action tomorrow, October 3 against MSU-Denver. Game time is at 4:00 p.m.
