SPEARFISH, S.D.—Home cooking following a road stand seems to be the spices in the recipe that propels the Black Hills State University volleyball team over the edge. Following a ten-game road stand to kick off the 2015 season, the Yellow Jackets notched a 3-0 win in their home opener against New Mexico Highlands on September 25.
BHSU came up with another victory following a road stand when they defeated South Dakota Mines 3-0 on October 6. The question heading into their matchup with Chadron State College at the Young Center on Friday night was whether they could produce a winning-streak out of it.
The Yellow Jackets put that question to bed with a 3-2 victory over Chadron State in front of a crowd of 428 at the Young Center. BHSU is now in the midst of their first winning-streak of the season.
BHSU improves to 6-10, 3-5 RMAC while Chadron State falls to 4-11, 3-4 RMAC.
Yellow Jackets 3, Chadron State 2
The Yellow Jackets responded with a 1-0 match deficit in favor of Chadron State (25-23). BHSU gave the Eagles a few points on attack errors, but gained an edge when a pair of Cassidy Steele kills paced BHSU to a 7-4 lead in set two.
BHSU held onto the lead until the Eagles cruised back and tied the set 16-16 thanks to four Rudy Leasau kills. The Yellow Jackets took the lead for good when Kenzie Kazmer registered a kill to make the score 17-16, which helped lock a 25-22 set-two win to tie the match 1-1.
Chadron State responded in set three with a 25-23 win to take a 2-1 match lead.
That was enough to fuel the Yellow Jackets as they took an 8-4 lead in set four, led by Danielle Torpey's two kills. The Eagles narrowed the gap as close as 8-6, but couldn't fend off BHSU as they increasingly widened their lead to secure a 25-16 set-four win to tie the match 2-2.
The fifth set saw BHSU trailing 3-0, but quickly tied things 4-4 thanks to three Eagle attack errors.
BHSU tied the Eagles 5-5 and 6-6 before they secured the lead for good on a Chadron State attack error to make the score 7-6. A pair of kills from Steele helped BHSU maintain a 14-11 lead before Fehrin Ward put the icing on top with a kill to give BHSU a 15-11 win in set five, and a 3-2 match win.
Torpey led BHSU with 12 kills while Kenzie Kazmer notched a career-high 11 kills. Brynn Eckhardt finished with 38 assists.
The Yellow Jackets will return to action tomorrow against Regis University at the Young Center. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.
