SPEARFISH, S.D. –
Brynn Eckhardt registered her fifth triple-double on the season to lift Black Hills State University to its second Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference win on Tuesday night against South Dakota Mines University. Eckhardt had 20 assists, 13 digs and 12 kills.
The Yellow Jackets took sets one, two and four while the Hardrockers took set three. The sets went as follows: 25-12, 25-18, 25-20, 25-13.
In set one, Black Hills State came out strong taking a quick 1-0 lead on the match. The Yellow Jackets were up 18-9 when SD Mines tried to cut the lead but were unable too. BHSU scored three-straight points to close out the set at 25-12 with kills by Eckhardt,
Danielle Torpey and
Tara Hall.
In set two, both teams traded off points until 6-all when the Yellow Jackets ran away with it. At 11-7,
Brynn Eckhardt served for five-straight points getting two service aces and two points coming from errors by the Hardrockers and one point from blocks by Torpey and
Fehrin Ward. Black Hills State closed the set out at 25-18 to take a 2-0 lead on the match.
In the fourth set, BHSU once again took a quick lead to go up by five at 10-5. At 14-7,
Lacy Stevens served for five-straight points to go up 18-7 on the Hardrockers. Two of those five points came from blocks by
Cheyenne Palu,
Sierra Stugelmeyer and
Kenzie Kazmer while two came from service aces by Stevens and one attack error by SD Mines. The Green and Gold closed the set out at 25-13 to win the match 3-1.
Joining Eckhardt on offense, Palu and Torpey each recorded eight kills while Stugelmeyer had seven.
Laurel Lech registered ten assists to help the Yellow Jackets to a win.
On defense, Stevens took charge with 23 digs. Palu assisted Stevens with nine blocks while Ward recorded eight.
"We had great emotional control and focus for our rivalry match verse SD Mines," said head coach
Kristin Carmichael.
"I was very pleased with how we blocked and how aggressive we were with our serve. It was a great team win!"
Black Hills State improves to 4-13 on the season and 2-7 in RMAC action while the Hardrockers fall to 1-19 overall and 0-9 in conference play.
The Green and Gold will be back to host the Westminister Griffins on Friday evening with the first serve at 7 p.m.
