KINGSVILLE, Texas – The Black Hills State University men's basketball team dropped its season-opener 75-59 to Texas A&M – Kingsville Saturday in Kingsville, Texas.
Fraser Malcolm completed a double-double of 13 points and 13 rebounds while
Wyatt Krogman added 13 points and four assists.
Zach McLemore added 12 points in his Yellow Jacket debut.
After the Yellow Jackets fell behind 11-15 in the opening minutes of the game,
Stefan Desnica scored a layup followed by four-straight points from Krogman to take the lead at 12-11 with 10:32 remaining in the first half.
From there
Max Mueller scored on a layup and Malcolm sank a 3-point basket to give the Green and Gold a six-point lead at 17-11.
The Javelinas made their come back and regained the lead at 18-17. Fraser hit one-of-two free throws with 5:55 on the clock to knot the game at 18-18 but TAMKU took a 25-22 halftime lead.
Coming out of the break
Patrick Mendes hit an open McLemore who launched a trey to tie the game at 25-all but that was followed quickly by a layup from Elliot Taylor.
Black Hills State knotted the game one last time at 27-27 when
Max Mueller dunked home the basket.
Although Texas A&M – Kingsville didn't pull away with the lead, it controlled most of the second half with a lead hovering between four and seven points until the waning moments of the game when BHSU slowed the game down by committing fouls late.
The Javelinas were led Trey Sumpter with 21 points while Duan Wright added 10. Black Hills State shot 33.3 percent from the field on 17-of-51 shooting and 6-of-24 from deep. TAMUK hit 40.9 percent of its shots on 27-of-66 shooting and 9-of-26 from long range.
Black Hills State out-rebounded the home squad 44-35 and added 13 second-chance points. Along with McLemore and Desnica, Black Hills State saw debuts from
LD Thomas,
Jonas Anderson,
Antonio Capley,
Sam McCloud and
Elijah Coleman. All but McLemore were making their collegiate debuts.
Black Hills State travels to Laredo, Texas, to face Texas A&M International in a 5 p.m. tip-off Saturday. TAMIU defeated South Dakota Mines 78-66 Friday night in both squads season-debuts.
