WSOC: Yellow Jackets Topped by Mountain Lions, 4-3

SPEARFISH, S.D. – The Black Hills State University soccer team fought a hard match falling 4-3 to the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs.

The Yellow Jackets had a fast start as they took a quick 1-0 lead in the first three minutes as one of the Mountain Lions defenders tipped the ball into their own net. The Mountain Lions then responded at the 15th minute with a goal by Bailee Jameson assisted by Michaela Mansfield to tie the game 1-1. 

The Mountain Lions came out of the half to take the lead 2-1 in the 55th minute with a lofted ball in front of the net by Bailee Jameson for Michaela Mansfield to get a foot on it and sneak it past Therese Wilhelmi

The Yellow Jackets trailed 4-1 until the 86th minute when Emma Jurewicz attempted a cross kick and launched the ball right into the back left corner trailing then 4-2.  Katie Nielson set the ball up for Jurewicz to make the goal. 

In the final seconds of the game, Katie Nielson received a through ball from Molly Lauseng and had a one on one with the goalkeeper to score to put the Yellow Jackets down, 4-3.  It was not enough to come out with the victory.

The Yellow Jackets tallied 14 shots, eight on target.  Emma Jurewicz tallied two shots with one on target and scoring the goal to get her first of the season.  Katie Nielson tallied five shots, four on frame and one goal to make that her second of the season.  Both Jessica Ryan and Rose Miller tallied two shots with one landing on frame.

 "We as a team are still growing and needed to get this first home game done and dusted," said head coach Rob Blake.

"Now the experience will help us improve even more, we are heading on the right trail and the results will come as we improve more and more. I thank everyone for coming out today and giving great support for the team."

The Yellow Jackets fall to 0-1 in the RMAC and 0-4 on the season while the Mountain Lions improve to 1-3 on the season and 1-0 in the conference.

Black Hills State plays again on Sunday at 1 p.m. against Western State.
