SPEARFISH, S.D. – The Black Hills State University volleyball team drops its home debut against Adams State, 3-1.
The Yellow Jackets took the Grizzlies to four sets falling short of a victory. Black Hills State took set one and lost the next three. The sets went as follows: 25-20, 25-19, 25-23, and 25-21.
In the first set, the Grizzlies kept it close staying neck-in-neck with the Yellow Jackets until Black Hills State scored five straight points to end the set 25-20.Â
The second set, the Yellow Jackets got off to a quick 5-1 start but the Grizzlies were able to keep it close. The Yellow Jackets kept the lead most of the match until 17-all when ASU gained momentum and finished it at 25-19.
The fourth set, both teams battled hard. At 19-all, Adams State went full blast and scored four straight points to take the lead 23-19. Black Hills tried to rally back but it wasn't enough for the victory.
Brynn Eckhardt led the offense tallying 39 assists. Both Ellise Lech and Sierra Stugelmeyer recorded 12 kills. Stugelmeyer registered a .346 hitting percentage while Lech had a .250 hitting percentage.Â
On the defense, Lacy Stevens recorded 23 digs. Alongside to help Stevens, Cheyenne Palu recorded eight blocks and Sydney Ederhoff recorded 11 digs.Â
"We did a good job of controlling their normal go-to hitter, but allowed others to get on a roll and score," said head coach Kristin Carmichael. "We had too many serving errors and didn't put it away enough on offense."
"We battled but have to find a constant scorer in the 20s. We need to bounce back tomorrow against Fort Lewis."
The Yellow Jackets fall to 2-6 on the season and 0-1 in the RMAC and the Grizzlies improved to 6-4 on the season and 1-0 in conference play.
Black Hills State plays again tomorrow at 5:30 p.m. against Fort Lewis.
