SPEARFISH, S.D. – The Black Hills State University women's soccer team fell in a close battle to Westminster College on Wednesday night, 3-2.
The Green and Gold fall to 1-15 overall and 1-10 in conference action, while the Griffins improve to 8-8-1 on the season and 5-6-1 in conference.
After a scoreless 17 minutes of play, the Yellow Jackets scored a team goal, as Westminster missed the ball to clear it and it bounced into the net. This gave Black Hills State a 1-0 lead and set the momentum.
Two minutes later, the Griffins answered back, as Aimee Kurfurst hit Skye Jefferies on a one-timer in the box in front of the net. Jefferies placed the ball in the back center of net to tie the game, 1-1.
In the 39
th minute, Libby Dearden grabbed a rebound and tipped the ball into the net near the post to give the Griffins a 2-1 lead heading into halftime.
In the final ten minutes of game action, Westminster and the Yellow Jackets made it interesting. Dearden hit Abigail Black in the crease, who hit the back left corner of the net, and increased the Griffin lead to 3-1. However, less than a minute later,
Katie Nielson hit a pass to
Therese Wilhelmi for a tip in to the back right corner to bring the Green and Gold within one at 3-2, but it was not enough.
On offense, Wilhelmi scored her first career goal. Alongside Wilhelmi, Nielson and
Mikayla Hernandez each tallied two shots, with both Hernandez's shots landing on target, while Nielson had one.
Rose Miller notched one shot.
Wilhelmi and
Raven Johnson split the time in net. Wilhelmi registered two saves, while Johnson had one.
The Yellow Jackets close out their season on Saturday, October 28, hosting Colorado Mesa. Kickoff is scheduled for 11 a.m.
