CHADRON, Neb. – The Black Hills State University volleyball team fell on Friday night, 3-1, to Chadron State.

The Yellow Jackets took set one, while the Eagles took sets two, three, and four. The scores went as follows: 25-12, 25-22, 25-21, and 25-11.

Black Hills State falls to 6-10 overall, and 3-4 in conference play, while Chadron improves to 5-10 on the season, and 2-5 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.

In set one, the Yellow Jackets went on a 6-0 run in the beginning to lead 7-1. The run started with a kill by Sierra Stugelmeyer. Fehrin Ward served for the next five points, tallying two service aces for two out of the six points for the Green and Gold. Two errors by the Eagles and a kill by Ellise Lech gave BHSU the last three points of the run to lead 7-1.

The Yellow Jackets increased their lead to 11 points, 20-9. That was enough for the Green and Gold to close out the set at 25-12, and take a 1-0 lead in the match.

The second set was another story, as the Eagles jumped out to an 11-3 lead. However, later in the set, the Yellow Jackets trailed, 24-18, until a kill by Stugelmeyer started a 4-0 run. Laurel Lech notched the next two points in the run to bring the Yellow Jackets within three, at 24-21. An error by the Eagles closed the gap for BHSU to trail by two at 24-22.

However, McKenna Hartigan ended the set, 25-22, with a kill and tied the match 1-1.

In set three, the Yellow Jackets started out with the lead until nine-all. From there, both teams traded off points until 14-all, when the Eagles scored two quick points to lead, 16-14, causing BHSU to take a timeout.

After the timeout, the Eagles managed to increase the lead, 17-14. L. Lech ended Chadron's point run to trail, 17-15. However, it was not enough as CSC closed out the set at 25-21, and took a 2-1 lead in the match.

The Eagles momentum continued into set four, as they jumped out to a 5-0 lead over the Yellow Jackets. That lead was enough for Chadron to hold on and defeat the Green and Gold, 25-11, and take the match, 3-1.

Kenzie Kazmer led the offense, notching 11 kills with a .321 hitting percentage. Ellise Lech tallied nine kills, while Stugelmeyer and Cheyenne Palu each had seven. Laurel Lech registered 31 assists.

On defense, Sydney Ederhoff recorded 14 digs. Palu, worked alongside Ederhoff, had five blocks. Fehrin Ward notched three service aces.
