SPEARFISH, S.D. – The Black Hills State University softball team hosts the New Mexico Highlands Cowgirls for a four-game series April 1 and 2. First pitch is slated for noon and 11 a.m., respectively.
After finishing 15-30 overall and 9-25 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, the Cowgirls were picked to finish 11
th this season in the preseason poll but they currently rank ninth with a 10-23 and 7-13 RMAC record.
Senior outfielder Monica Caporal owns a .371 batting average in 32 games played and started. In 89 at-bats, Caporal has tallied 33 hits with 10 RBIs, four doubles and 23 runs scored.
Alongside Caporal, senior catcher Katelyn Bates leads the team with 31 RBIs and 10 home runs in 32 games and a .281 batting average. On the defensive side, Bates owns a .964 fielding percentage with 181 put outs against just seven errors.
In the circle, senior Madison Davis has made 16 starts in 19 appearances. Davis has pitched 94 innings tallying 42 strikeouts and nine complete games. Davis owns a 5-9 record.
Black Hills State owns a 3-21 and 1-15 conference record after falling in four games at Chadron State.
Sophomore outfielder
Morgan Smith leads the Yellow Jackets offense with a .343 batting average in 24 games. In 70 at-bats, Smith has tallied 13 runs and three triples in 24 hits.
Sophomore
Alex Wiley has made 11 starts in 14 appearances in the circle. Wiley has pitched eight complete games with one shut out. In 74.1 innings pitched, Wiley has struck out 37 batters.
Following the weekend, the Yellow Jackets hit the road to Colorado to take on RMAC opponent Colorado Mesa in a four-game series on April 8 and 9. First pitch is slated for noon and 11 a.m., respectively.
