MBB: Yellow Jackets edge Grizzlies, 67-65

SPEARFISH, S.D. – Fraser Malcolm's 25 points led the way, as the Black Hills State University men's basketball team defeated Adams State, 67-65, on Saturday evening.

Malcolm scored over 20 points for the third time this season to lead the Yellow Jackets (10-5, 7-4 RMAC). Makaleb McInnis and Antonio Capley each added 10 points.

BHSU took control of the game in the first five minutes, leading by eight points, 14-6, with 15:43 left in the first half. After Adams State (9-9, 7-5 RMAC) came back within two points, the Yellow Jackets extended the lead out to as many as 15 in the first half. With 7:50 remaining in the half, Malcolm made a bucket, and the home team led, 31-16. However, the Grizzlies ended the half on a 15-3 run, and the Green and Gold led by just two, 34-32, at the break.

The second half was a more back-and-forth affair, with three ties and four lead changes. ASU led, 55-54, with 6:12 left in the game. Malcolm responded with a trey to put the Yellow Jackets back in front, 57-55. With the Green and Gold leading, 63-61, with 1:01 remaining, Shane Johnson scored in the paint for the Grizzlies to tie the game up. Antonio Capley responded with a layup of his own, assisted by McInnis to take the lead back for good. BHSU ultimately took the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference game, 67-65.

BHSU shot 39.7 percent from the field (23-for-58), while ASU was 43.6 percent from the floor (24-for-55). The Yellow Jackets were 9-for-22 (40.9 percent) from beyond the arc, while the Grizzlies were 6-for-15 (40.0 percent) on three-pointers. BHSU was 12-for-17 (70.6 percent) from the free throw line, while Adams State was 11-for-17 (64.7 percent).  The Green and Gold outrebounded the Grizzlies, 41-33.  

For the Grizzlies, Johnson led the way with 17 points. Frederick Jackson had 14, while Brandon Sly and Jarrett Givens each added 11.

The Green and Gold next host rival South Dakota Mines on Tuesday, January 16, at 7:30 p.m.
