LAS VEGAS, N.M. – Fraser Malcolm had 15 points, but the Black Hills State University men's basketball team fell to New Mexico Highlands University, 75-62, on Friday evening.
Malcolm recorded 15 points and eight rebounds to lead the Yellow Jackets (7-5, 4-4 RMAC).
Zach McLemore made three three-pointers to finish with nine points.
The two teams stuck together for 16 minutes, exchanging baskets and the lead. With 4:16 left in the first half, the game was tied, 30-30, when
Wyatt Krogman made a free throw. At that point, NMHU (10-4, 5-3 RMAC) went on a 12-2 run to close out the half and take a 10-point lead, 42-32, into the break.
The Green and Gold drew within seven two times in the second half, but with 13 minutes remaining, the Cowboys began to pull away. Leading 52-45, NMHU went on a 13-2 lead to take a 65-47 lead with 8:48 left in the game. A three-pointer by Krogman with 2:52 remaining brought BHSU with nine, but the Yellow Jackets were unable to get any closer, and ultimately fell by 13, 75-62.
BHSU shot 45.7 percent from the field (21-for-46), while NMHU was 54.5 percent from the floor (30-for-55). The Yellow Jackets were 8-for-22 (36.4 percent) from beyond the arc, while the Cowboys were 9-for-18 (50.0 percent) on three-pointers. BHSU was 12-for-20 (60.0 percent) from the free throw line, and New Mexico Highlands was 6-for-11 (54.5 percent) from the charity stripe. The Green and Gold were outrebounded, 30-21.
Chris Lewis led the Cowboys with 19 points and 12 rebounds.
The Green and Gold next travel to CSU-Pueblo on Saturday, January 6. The rematch with the ThunderWolves is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.
