Box Score DURANGO, COLO. – The Black Hills State University volleyball team fell, 3-0, to Fort Lewis College on Friday night. The Skyhawks won by scores of 25-19, 25-22, 13-25, and 25-16.
The first set was a back-and-forth affair, with neither team setting a substantial lead until the Skyhawks went on a 5-2 run to lead the Yellow Jackets, 9-6. A kill from both
Ellise Lech and
Sierra Stugelmeyer put the Yellow Jackets behind by two points. As the Green and Gold were unable to bridge the gap, Fort Lewis went on to take the set, 25-19, to jump ahead in the match.
The Yellow Jackets started to find momentum in the second set after a service ace from
Peyton Bodemann and a kill by Stugelmeyer helped the Green and Gold go on a 5-2 run to lead the Skyhawks, 8-4. Fort Lewis responded with a 4-2 run to jump ahead of the Yellow Jackets. An attack error from the Skyhawks tied up the set, 17-17, until a kill by
Jadie DeLange put the Green and Gold back in the lead. Fort Lewis went on the take the set, 25-22, and lead the match, 2-0.
In the third set, Fort Lewis attacked early, but BHSU responded with a service ace from
Ellise Lech and kill by DeLange to even the score. Kills from both
Madison Hoopman and
Laurel Lech pushed the Green and Gold to an 11-8 lead over the Skyhawks. The Yellow Jackets never let up going on a 7-3 run to put the score at 17-10 in favor of the Green and Gold. A kill from Hoopman ended the third set, with the Yellow Jackets taking the set, 25-13.
The Skyhawks jumped out to a 6-1 lead and never looked back in the fourth set. A kill from
Makayla Bell and
Ellise Lech bridged the gap in half of the Fort Lewis' lead. Despite the Green and Golds effort, Fort Lewis took the set and the match, 3-0.
Stugelmeyer and DeLange led Black Hills State with seven kills each, followed by Ellise and
Laurel Lech with six.
The Yellow Jackets will move on to face Adams State on Saturday, Oct. 13, in Alamosa, Colo. First serve is set at 5 p.m. against the Grizzlies.
